How long do I wait

Hi everyone. I planted three hydrangeas a year or so ago. the 2 in the backyard are doing "all right", blooming now and then. I was expecting lots of beautiful blooms but I will wait another year to see if they do better.

My question is about the one I planted in another location, which has more shade. The plant itself looks happy and healthy and green. BUT i haven't seen a bud or a flower. How long should I give this one (it is supposedly a "small" type of hydrangea but i can't remember the name at all and I can't find the tag.) until I move it to another location? I wanted some flowers in this bed that also has a large stand of coreopsis and some Rhododendons. So what do I do? Move it now, or give it another year.

Anita,

It would be really helpful for you to find out exactly what hydrangeas they are, as you are in Zone 6 and those that bloom on old wood may not be blooming due to dying back during winter.

Also, in your more shaded bed, you have coreopsis? I thought that it would require more sunlight?

Anyway, before you move anything, please find out what hydrangeas they are, so that one could give you some accurate advice as to what you should do with your hydrangeas.

Hi, thanks for writing. These three hydrangeas were sent as replacements for plants that died by a mail order catalog so I didn't actually order them & I can't remember what they were. I think they may be endless summers? Although somehow I thought the one in the front was a different variety. IS Endless Summer a dwarf hydrangea?

Yes the coreopsis is in a northern exposure and doesn't get all that much sun. The coreopsis probably has a shorter bloom time than they should but they were there when we bought the house 10 years ago, and they are ok.

Can Hydrangea be identified by foliage? I can take photos of them if that would help. Thanks again.

SOL!...lol Doris you remind me so much of myself, except I tend to think it and you write it! he heee : ) I think 2 weeks is long enough to wait on an SASBE to arrive at your mail box. I agree with Doris, email them that they have a certain amount of time left (whatever you decide on), and if you don't receive their SASBE's by then, pass on the seeds to others. Posting this under your original thread is also a good idea in case people don't read their emails or they are sent to spam. You've hit all the bases. Don't let it get long. If you want it at 1", wait for it to get to 1.5" and then mow it down. Mowing frequently will encourage lateral growth and it will fill in faster. Just make sure you have sharp mower blades so it cuts cleanly and doesn't rip the young plants apart.

FWIW the two roses I had with RRD last year were huge and there are very large holes where they were. One has already send up two new roses, one with RRD (now also dug up). The other hasn't sent anything up, yet. But I think this year I'll put cardboard down, with mulch over it, because on really big roses, I don't think we can get rid of the roots. I think the possibility of root to root transmission needs to be watched for. And the bigger the rose, the more roots. (Rule of thumb: if I can dig it out, I can replant within three to six months. If Larry digs it out, wait a year. I don't think I could have dug out James Galway, and I know I couldn't have dragged it to the burn pile, it was too heavy.)

Hi Anita,

Sure! Photos would be great - it depends on the type of hydrangeas, some have leaves that are more distinctive than others, but it's still worth showing it to us!

Endless Summer is not a dwarf. It gets to be about 3-5' tall and wide.

Let me ask you this question - after winter, did you find that all the previous year's wood/stems were all dead? Or did they survive? Also, did you prune them at all? These could all be hints as to why they did not bloom.
