Propagating old fashioned roses
Comments (3)Hi, fanatic - Caroline's right - The Rose Propagation & Exchange forum has a Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) section that should provide you with the info you need to root either cuttings or suckers of your rosebush. You don't give any details on your "old-fashioned" rosebush; I for one would love to know what the flowers look and smell like. If they are small, single, white blossoms and the plant only blooms once a year, it may be Rosa multiflora. You really don't want to propagate R. multiflora as it is an invasive weed that also is a known vector for Rose Rosette disease, a very serious disease that spreads quickly to cultivated roses. However, if it isn't R. multiflora ... there are a bunch of us on the Antique Rose and Rose ID forums who are interested in "mystery" roses - we propagate and try to identify them. Feel free to email me if you have any other questions about your rose - I collect antique roses and might be able to help you out. Here is a link that might be useful: Rose Propagation FAQ Page...See MoreSeeds I can plant along a stone wall
Comments (2)I have a plant the fills the bill - it is a native wildflower called herb robert. The foliage is like a fine cranesbill geranium only a lighter green and it is covered in tiny pink flowers from early spring till snow covers it. It spreads quickly and will choke out your weeds but is easy to pull out - If you can't find it I could save seeds for you and send you some. Comments (4)Wicking up water is correct. Don't laugh, but this week's This Old House Hour new episode had Roger digging up a Hydrangea plant/tree because he needed to change the grade to better slope away from the house. He showed PRECISELY your situation and attributed it to "Wicking." Listen to Roger say it is moisture wicking up - he inexplicably suggests it's the roots bring the water over - when he made the case that he needs to remove the plant in order to regrade. Comments (11)I'm growing Sarah's Old-fashioned Black and Cherokee Trail of Tears too - in UK. If I'd realised how similar they are I would have kept more careful notes of the different growth patterns etc. I'm picking them dried at the moment. The pods of Sarah's dry lighter in colour here - Sarah's on the right and Cherokee on the left in the photo. The dried beans themselves are very similar size and colour here but the Sarah's are perhaps a little fatter and more torpedo shape and the Cherokee a little flatter. Sorry the seed photo isn't better quality. I think Cherokee is perhaps more prolific but I grew them in different circumstances so I'm not sure. It was great to find someone else is comparing these two beans. I wonder what the parentage is way back!...See Moreredhighlander
