Guardian Angel

I purchased a Guardian Angel today and was wondering what is the best sight for it, sun, shade, or dappled light. He's a two eye division of a plant that had leafed out and he's kinda leggy with big but few leaves. He also has some brown crispy edges on some of the leaves so I don't want to traumatize him further. I've been looking for one of these for a while so I kinda want to baby him. I'm new to the forum so thanks for being a great source of info. Gail

Dappled light or morning light. Don't worry about the crispy. Just water, water, water. :)

As you will find out from reading this forum, the amount of sun that a hosta will benefit from depends on your latitude and the amount of water it gets. The further north you are the more sun a hosta will be able to grow in. If you live in the UK you could probably grow it all day in the sun.

Since this is a new plant and you want to baby it. I would suggest that you put it in high dappled shade if you can. You want to make sure that it gets enough sun, but not more than the roots can handle. That will allow the growth cycle to continue uninterrupted this year.

Barb, congratulations on your new GA! Nice size too! - it is an eye catcher, who could resist? Love that streaky leaf shape between 5-6 o'clock and the way the leaf curves at the tip. Jennifer, thanks for going to the trouble and taking those pics! I admit that from all my GA pics, that very blue one is a favourite. I had no idea it went through such a transition. Speaking of transition....Your GA, with the green-blue in those shots, combined with water drops, is beautiful! I love the mystery of this hosta ... every leaf is different, every plant is different. The common factor is "gorgeous"!

Great idea and great looking hosts Don. GA has been a great grower for me, just like it has for you Wish I had taken pics each year to see its progression....but mine is older than digital camera's, I might have some cave drawings of its early years though.

Hostatakeover, that is a beautiful specimen! Sally, I've read that when mature, only the newest flush of leaves of GA have the waviness. However, Hostatakeover's picture is certainly an exception to that. If it makes you feel better, here is what mine looked like last year...barely any colour, or ripples. Looked nice but not what I expected. Someone pointed out that occasionally, GA just doesn't colour up well so I just accepted that reasoning. (Have not synched my devices, sorry. I'll post photo shortly.) This was last July. Mine is a division from a mature one and is coming up year three now. Today's shot..

If it doesn't show some variegation as a juvenile plant, it's never going to have the striking variegation you see in photos. This one is extremely variable out of tissue culture, with many being solids, some with a small amount of variegation, and about half having varying amounts of more extensive variegation. Also, the plant in the photo does not show any of the ruffled edges GA should have. This is one that I would never order on line, and I recommend that you find a nursery where you can check all the plants, and pick the one with the most variegation and ruffling. You might also ask some of the smaller hosta sellers if they have it, and ask for a photo before ordering. If you get a good one, it's spectacular in the garden, so worth seeking out.

Thanks for the help. I'm in southeastern PA so we get quite a bit of intense sun.

I am also in SE PA and I have my GA in full screamin hot sun from 10:00 until about 1:00 PM and it has grown like a champ. I have given it copious amounts of water when the temps are above 90 (we've had a bumch already and this week will be brutal) and I do fertilize with osmocote. It went from 3 puny rootbound eyes last year to several huge gorgeous eyes this year.

My Huardian Angel, while nice and healthy, is in a lot of shade and the variegation is pretty subtle. I don't know if more light would give it more color but maybe.

I'd go with dappled shade and lots of water when it gets hot. Make sure you give it plenty of room, it should grow to 6 feet across in a few years.
