HVX on a Blue Hosta??

Hello fellow hosta lovers; I am now IN LOVE with hostas and have recently purchased lots of different varieties. I bought a lovely large blue hosta (not labeled!) from a local nursery and have started noticing spots on one or two of the leaves. The spots seem to be see-through, or thin places on the leaves. Could this possibly (I HOPE NOT) be HVX??? I don't have a picture to post, but will try to get one today.

see thru means nothing in re hvx.. IMHO ...

but we still want to see a pic ..

It may just be snail or slug damage.

We'll all pick on you to give us a picture. :)

I have posted a lot this year about HVX. One of the things that I have to temper is getting all wound up about HVX and then looking at my hosta and seeing HVX where none exists. I have done this several times. We all need to watch for HVX because there is plenty of it out there, but I have to make sure I don't get paranoid (Anitamo, not that I think you are getting paranoid :-)) Sometimes what is natural puckering on a leaf, if it is concentrated, causes me to think of collapsing tissue, but is just natural puckering or even where a leaf unfurled in a strange way. I don't see anything in the photo that is suspect.

Whew, you all are fantastic! EO, you have beautiful gardens and are a wealth of knowledge (and wise to let your wife do what she wants!). Hostagrams, don't know how you did it; diggin' and movin' and plantin'.....hope everything goes well with the new house. Fantastic pic! Botanybabe, I don't have any glossy ones, I'll have to put one on my list. I especially like Candy Dish. Jbranch, I agree with the Sagae. I just planted one on Monday. I am definitely considering Krossa Regal... Woodthrush, ain't it the truth! Checking the photos on this forum is like buying a new book and trying not to read the last page....I know I shouldn't look, but I can't stop myself! Dbowemd; I don't think you left out a thing!!! I have tried to cover most of these; I seem to LOVE the streaked ones, and I do have more of these than anything else. Maureen ottawa, I have 9 of the ones on your list, but the rest look awfully tempting...... Hosta freak Phil, we got a little rain on Sunday night, enough to fill my rain barrel to the first band. Every drop helps though! I actually live in Valdese, I guess a little closer to the foothills than in the piedmont. I know what you are going through. Keep the faith! And greenguy, I only have 1 on your list, Guardian Angel, but the others look very interesting.... So, I'm thinking that these are my next "investments"... June Krossa Regal something glossy.... Golden Friendship Beckoning ....that is, after I get these in the ground: Fair Maiden Ice Age Trail First Frost Silver Threads and Golden Needles Jack of Diamonds Fire and Ice ......does it ever end??????? Concerned about these Hosta-Nems & HVX

Hey Melissa! I'm sorry to say, but your suspicions about the nems. looks very well grounded! I have had a couple of hosta show up with them this year, too--not having been evident last year. One in a pot in the ground so I feel it must have had them when I received them. One of the ones I had last year, that presented with nems. I poured near boiling water all around the surface of the plant. I was surprised it survived the treatment and came back this year and so far no presentation of the nems. The ones this year that I found, I removed most of the leaves with the stripes and then I poured 130 degree water all over the plants and the surrounding soil. I keep checking with a magnifying glass with a torn leaf in water (after at least an hour) and so far there is no new evidence of nem presence or activity! I don't know how this will prove out long term but I'm going to keep this up and see!!! I'm also sad to say, I don't trade with folks anymore because I have purchased hosta online with nems--I've been 'gifted' hosta with them and I've purchased plants locally with them. I do not want to risk unknowingly passing them along to another hosta lover, since they have shown up in hosta that have not previously appeared to have them. You just never know--and it's not worth it to me!! :o( I hate those things!!! :o(

it's quite funny that they had this kind of hosta. ==>>> i would presume they had it.. because it was fragrant ... that is rather unusual ... especially back in the late 90s when i bought it ... and the white flower ... two characteristics that are out of the ordinary ... back in the day.. it was hard to get seedlings with plantaginea as a parent ... and we didnt have all these guacamole etc.. clones .... herb benedict got a few ... sweet Winifred.. holly something or another .... and apparently francis williams got one .. or a hosta friend.. sent her a seedling ... introduced in 1964 .... crikey.. its almost as old as me.. lol .... regardless of the fact that it is ugly ... lol .. but that isnt why it was an important advancement in hostadom .... in its own time .... ken http://myhostas.be/db/view/Snow+Flakes

open two windows....

first go to photobucket.com in one window .... its free and pretty easy ....

then go to the FAQ's in the other... look for the FAQ about photobucket and follow the info there..

Here is your picture:

That looks like frost damage, not HVX. And athough HVX can create some translucent patches on some varieties of hostas, this isn't what it looks like.

Frost can sometimes settle onto a wet leaf and create this type of damage pattern. My guess is that this is on only the oldest leaf, possibly caused when it wasn't even unfurled yet, which is why it is only on the part of the leaf that was exposed while the rest might have been curled up still.
