My irises in bloom link to photos

Hi all,

Here are a few of my new irises blooming! I got New Leaf, Spin-Off, and Rip City from Schreiner's. Cajun Rhythm and Total Recall were nursery purchases.

Enjoyed seeing your iris in their garden setting. You've incorporated them beautifully!

Spin-Off is one of my favorites and Cajun Rhythm is on my list.

Your garden pathway is so lovely. Geat job with the iris and roses combos.

I love the color of English Charm, it reminds me of orange sherbert. Yummy :-))

I was mistaking the yellow leaves for flowers. Regarding chlorosis, there are many causes. Yellowing of a leaf between dark green veins is called chlorosis and is usually caused by an iron deficiency. Many conditions can be responsible for an iron deficiency. Poor drainage, planting too deeply, heavy soil with poor aeration, insect or fungus damage in the root zone and lack of moisture all induce chlorosis. After these conditions are eliminated as possible causes, soil testing is in order. Chlorosis can be caused by malnutrition caused by alkalinity of the soil, potassium deficiency, calcium deficiency, iron deficiency, magnesium deficiency or too much phosphorus in the soil. Iron is most readily available in acidic soils between pH 4.5-6.0. When the soil pH is above 6.5, iron may be present in adequate amounts, but is in an unusable form, due to an excessive amount of calcium carbonate. This can occur when plants are placed too close to cement foundations or walkways. Soil amendments that acidify the soil, such as iron sulfate or sulfur, are the best long term solution. For a quick but only temporary improvement in the appearance of the foliage, ferrous sulfate can be dissolved in water (1 ounce in 2 gallons of water) and sprinkled on the foliage. Some garden centers sell chelated iron, which provides the same results. Follow the label recommendations for mixing and applying chelated iron. A combination of acidification with sulfur and iron supplements such as chelated iron or iron sulfate will usually treat this problem. Chlorosis caused by magnesium deficiency is initially the same as iron, but progresses to form reddish purple blotches and marginal leaf necrosis (browning of leaf edges). Epsom salts are a good source of supplemental magnesium. Chlorosis can also be caused by nitrogen toxicity (usually caused by nitrate fertilizers) or other conditions that damage the roots such as root rot, severe cutting of the roots, root weevils or root death caused by extreme amounts of fertilizer. I didn't see any slugs, but the leaves were browning from top-down and vice versa. The rhizomes were somewhat squishy and though I didn't see anything other than pill bugs and grubs, I just sorta assumed they were goners and borers was what someone told me. Maybe I watered too often. Gypsy Romance hasn't bloomed yet as they're only a couple months in. My other bearded iris and butterfly iris haven't bloomed since May so I tore off all the lantana that I allowed to creep in from under my neighbor's fence 3 months ago. It practically engulfed them. I'm still pulling large woody roots from underneath rhizomes. They're just now discovering that they have a lot more room now and are just popping out from the ground with new leaves. I am trying to give them a cleaner, more hospitable environment, so hopefully I fiiiiinally get blooms soon. Also, more rain on Thursday, says the forecast. I still have some Wench iris potted up from when I exterminated the lantana(I found more big roots underneath these) Is it too late to put them in the ground? I've been so busy lately that I haven't been keeping up with my iris beds. Transplanting more creeping daisies and direct-sowing the rest of the annuals before the rain, hopefully.

I don't think your mystery iris are Flavescens or Eldorado, though they look similar. The lavender one has form that looks to me like a newer iris than Eldorado, maybe 1920s or 30s instead of 1910s. The lighter colored one is definitely an oldie, though not necessarily as old as Flavescens - could be anything up to the 1910s. Sorry, I don't have alternative name suggestions, but thanks for preserving older iris, even if you haven't figured out who they are yet!

Kippy, I will try to get some more photos for you. Did you see the "roses recently discussed" thread? There is a photo there. Mine is very tall, like 8 ft high. I thought it was a typical HT. The buds are hot pink and slow to open with a nice fragrance. Blooms last quite awhile. It's more lavender than Love Song...Love Song finally has put out some decent blooms but the Huey rootstock just doesn't work for my garden. I will likely reorder on multiflora. Susan

Gorgeous garden! I like that parasol idea. We always have a couple of hot days that "melt" iris blooms, and I imagine you have quite a few.

Thanks. We'll see how long the parasols last- they are made of tissue paper.

I'm so anxious for all of the other new iris to bloom.
I'm still waiting on Mexican Holiday, Fine Wine, Impressionist, Frequent Flyer, and Starship Enterprise. I may have to wait until next year to see SE, it has just started to grow. I also bought Ruby Slippers before I learned that the teeny irises don't bloom in Socal. I may be shipping her off to a new home on the east coast soon...

That Cajan one is flashy!

I've got English Charm and NEw LEaf, in fact, I just noticed NEw Leaf blooming well after an absece of some years. I moved man of my iris to sunnier quarters and am being rewarded seeind old friend.

Woud ya'll consider New Leaf a luminata? I do.

Renee, I am new here and just got bit by the iris bug. Roses have been my obsession. I love the layout of your garden with the roses and iris cobination. I am a southern ca. transplant to the PNW. When I look at your photo's I can imagine the souther ca. sunshine on my back and the sounds and smells of the garden as I stroll down that beautiful path. Thanks for sharing. Patti

Thanks for the compliments. This weekend I went to Greenwood Daylilies and Irises and got Jennifer Rebecca. I can't wait to see it bloom to see what color it really is here. I'm not going to plant it until I see.

Kprp, yes, I think New Leaf is a luminata. It certainly is luminous.

tabarhodes, you will not be disappointed by Cajun Rhythm. It's still blooming. I can't stop taking pictures of it.

I don't think my other new irises will bloom this year. Boo hoo. But the daylilies are all ready to bloom!
