how about telling us the space size ?????

if BAngel is too big.. then the rest are probably also too big.. properly grown ...

Oh, I was under the impression that Blue Angel was bigger than the other 3.

I do have a digital camera, but have not figured out how to post pictures. Because my only access to the internet is at work or the library, I haven't played that much with it. Will try, because I love your pictures and would like to get the group's best help.

or just measure the height, width and length of the area ... or guess .... you might get 100 answers before you go to all that other trouble....

i suspect you will need a medium plant ...

BA has bigger potential .. but that doesnt make the rest smaller hosta ...

If the spot is "very shaded" none of them will get to be huge.

Abiqua Drinking Gourd is a medium. Love, love, love it!!!

My Blue Mammoth is new this year and tiny, so can't say. Bressingham Blue and Blue Umbrellas get big really fast. Mine are in their leap year, and leaped!

In my garden, my Bressingham is the smallest, but it's also the newest. My Blue Mammoth is the biggest, but it's a favorite cuz of the blue-grey tint.

For a medium, I really like Halcyon. Good grower for me and very nice color and form. Abiqua Drinking Gourd is also quite nice... texture and more upright form are lovely.

Both of these are quite easy to find too.

I'll ditto Ken. My 2 Blue Mammoths and 2 Big Daddys are both a good 5 ft across they did not take very long to get there although they are smaller than our Blue Angel. Check out Love Pat ... gorgeous cupped leaves, good grower but smaller than the big guys. Here is one of ours. See Big Daddy standing up behind!

Medium Blues:

You cannot go wrong with the beautiful 'Halcyon' -

For the back of your blue bed, the unusual shape of 'Krossa Regal.'

And though you don't see these two very often, I am very pleased with 'Topaz' and 'Winfield Blue.'

And how about a 'Fragrant Blue' for the front? All of these plants are their own unique shade of blue.

I love love love LOVE PAT. Mine is 40" wide and 22" high growing in high filtered shade. My BB is twice that size and grows in even more light. Light does play a big part in how big these babies grow. And of course my BB isn't as blue as it was in a darker location. My Love Pat is a gorgeous shade of dark blue, isn't bothered by slugs, and is it's same dependable self year after year--about 10 years old. Mary

I agree that Abiqua Drinking Gourd is a beautful blue with nice form. If you like the mounding-type, you can't beat Blue Cadet.

Blue Mammoth is enormous. Mine is close to 6' across, and so are my Blue Umbrellas and Blue Angel. Blue Angel is only 3 years old.

Go to hosta library and pick one you like that says it is a medium sized hosta.

Krossa Regal seems quite interesting in form. How blue is the color???

I measured the area last night (after moving some smaller plants and yanking out all the violets that had taken over). It's basically 36"width x 36"depth, with a least a foot of wiggle room on the width angle, as it would be fine if some of the plant grows behind the pine tree that centers this shaded bed.

In May, I bought "Love Pat" at the Sisters' Plant Sale (an annual plant yard sale at someone's home in eastern Mass.) not really knowing what it is. I liked the color and the form (and the price) so I got it. Now I know it will get a lot bigger than the space I planted it in!

Love Pat is a good choice...so is Blue Wedgwood, Blue Dimples, I'm So Blue, and Hadspen Blue...to name but a few medium-sized hostas.
Krossa Regal is nice but it is also a huge-sized hostas.

I thought I'd share my experience with blues this year.
I seem to be attracted to Blue Hosta...there are soooo many to choose from, so it's easy to add one to my collection that I don't already have.

HOWEVER, in my opinion, when you mass plant blues, the blue-ness gets lost a bit. It's almost like you need to plant a blue next to a green/chartreuse in order to truly see how blue it is!

I have Krossa in the back of my garden as Lisa suggested. It's not as blue as some of the others talked about.

I think my favorite in my garden right now is El Nino. But it's a blue-grey with a cream margin. The shade of blue-grey IMO is quite unique and IMO is a standout in the garden!
