The very best way to learn how to evaluate color in iris photos that you see online or in catalogs is to get a camera and take dozenss of pics of your own irises in all types of lighting (sun, shade, bright overcast, etc.), different times of day (morning, midday, dusk), and different stages in bloom (first opening, day old, ready to curl up). This will give you an excellent basis for evaluating other iris blooms you're not familiar with. You can take a dozen different photos of the same iris that all look different yet are all representative of the flower. So much is dependent on the lighting, the camera and finally the computer monitor. There is never just one shot that is definitive of the flower. This changeability is part of their magic and appeal. Look at the foliage in the background of the photo - is it excessively blue or yellow toned? Use that to evaluate the color on the bloom and which direction it may be pushed. I doubt that any reputable iris sellers (with the big warehouse catalogs being an exception - I'm talkin' bout you Van Borgondian, Wayside, et al! So guilty of this.) intentionally mislead people with their pictures. They want to give the best representation of their irises - if they mislead who will come back for more? Granted if an iris is red toned they want the photo to look red. And there is no true red in irises - it's all brick red, rust red, or wine red. Which one the picture shows depends on the lighting. The description is the best bet for evaluating photo accuracy. If it is way off chances are you got a mistake and your iris was labeled incorrectly. It happens. Send the seller a pic of the iris in your garden and if they agree it is not correct ask for a replacement or a correct name.

In its own suburban way, that's what the PO did to this house, magnaverde. We've been spending a lot of time taking out white colonial Home Depot molding and putting in small simple molding (painted the same color as the room), taking out 6 panel fake wood hollowcore doors and replacing them with solid core slab doors or fir single-lite pocket doors...one eyesore I haven't been able to fix yet is in the double -height foyer where a massive foyer fixture once hung, the PO put a cr*ppy white HD fan with shiny fake brass trim...UGH UGH UGH. I actually found a rather tasteful 70s Fredrick Ramond fixture in LN condition at a Habitat store, which would be much closer to what should show in that tall window above the door, but it's *difficult* to get up there and change the fixture out. We've given away so much colonial molding and use the doors for work surfaces. This is no masterpiece house, but it felt like it was being suffocated in faux-colonial trim and we've resimplified it so it could be itself again. Which will probably go completely unappreciated in this neighborhood, but it passed the time. palimpsest, if you have a feeling that you shouldn't post, I completely respect that. Don't want to jinx anything. We'll just have to wait until you have found something and then settled on it and then we can celebrate with you! I have faith that you can do anything you want and will make whichever house (and cash IS king right now, so I understand the drive to underspend) into a photogenic and soul-nourishing home.

Thanks for this thread. I’ve been taken to task, and learned a few things here, while trying to work through some ideas and idiosyncrasies on our current build. At the end of the day, I think we all want something that works for our current situation, isn’t an ugly disaster, and can be attractive for resale at some point down the road. It’s a tightrope act, for sure! My “sins”: We walk through our master closet to reach the master bath. I have a lower level “drive under” garage, but also have a main level carport/patio around back, directly attached to my kitchen, should anyone doubt my ability to carry up groceries. . I have 2 bathrooms with doors to the outside, the master, and a guest bath. (Both exiting poolside.) Said guest bath also connects to my laundry room. It’s my way of minimizing the wet towel problem, and I refuse to apologize. Call it an overreaction, but I’ve lived for 14 years with wet people and towels entering my master bedroom or living room (the closest doors from our current swimming hole.) I’m over it. I may even put a fingerprint lock on the door into my master bath.
