A friendly wave....

While out there, I noticed montana Aureomarginata unfurling pretty nicely so far with Sally and Bob in the background.

Hello Everyone,,, Did I hear...correctly? "ROSA" did she "WIN" Yea....I haven't been over here for a few days...and honsetly i thought another had the name in the "bag" LOL... I am so thrilled that my name as chosen...Thank's to JOJO post i found it out after reading her post up thread...That makes me very happy everyone!!! Ok...now...the winner...2 roundtrip tickets to the "Ponderosa ranch" LOL...oh..really..i know...To the islands to pick out my own "rosa" LOL...You guys and gals are the best!!! This was so much fum!!!...I have never won anything....The only time i do "win"...is when i am working and then it comes down to me or the passenger to turn off their electronic devices....i usually win then...LOL... But this takes the cake!!! I tell them...(Fereral offense...or turn it off!! LOL...) I usually win...or back to the gate!!! Then I still win!!! They are off of the plane!!! Yep--it was at first another name, according to 'MyHostas data base: "This is an old introduction..that originally carried the name H. 'Emerald Island' which conflicted with a registered name... (it was renamed) and reintroduced.. because so many customers have asked for it. The plant emerges with a beautiful gold color and an emerald green edge. As the season progresses the plant gets a bit ratty, but it reflushes later in the summer looking good into the Fall. It is a sport of Mildred Seaver's H. 'Sea Angel Wings' and has a ruffled edge at maturity. It looks best in the North where it holds its color through the season." I have it, from last year and it is a very pretty hosta! I can't wait to see it mature!

Journey's End is one of the great hostas. Beautiful, grows fast. Mine was 66 inches across last year even after taking a hail beating early in the season. Here it is.....Still unfurling this year but 44 eyes. .

"Attacked by hail" is a great expression.....love it. And Alycia, your colors are amazing, such a riot of intense color and multiple variegation of hosta as well. Have you posted that separately and ID'd any of the plants you use? I'd be interested for sure. I thought I bought this plant, but instead I got Sentimental Journey, not the same of course. So oh well, I still have one to look for. That and Color Revolt, which is sold out for this year. Bummer!!!

There must be something about montana A's growing in Minnesota. Mine tries to come up so early,that this year it is almost non-existant,due to being frozen so many times. If it dies I may not replace it,even though I love it. Very nice montana A.! Phil

Hey, Moccasin....you must live way down south, like in Alabama or something. Seed pods already. We don't even have the beginnings of scapes.

I wouldn't bother to plant any of the seeds, though. Waste of time.

You got it, esox, WAY down south in Dixie. Not quite coastal, but within a mile of Mobile Bay west side, maybe two miles south of the I-10 and I-65 junction to give you the crosshairs.

Why would it be a waste of time? Are they not fertile? That would be a bummer for me. I want to grow my own fragrant hosta from open pollenated seed.

To that end, I've arranged a few blooming pots with the scapes close together.

I once planted an entire 72-pellet greenhouse tray with Journey's End seeds because I like that hosta so much. Probably 300 seeds. A couple germinated. None grew.

I use the pollen successfully though.

You'd probably have the same results with Choo Choo Train if you could get that many pods to stay on the scapes without falling off long before they were ripe.

Awwww, Esox, that is a sad story.....wow. I see experience is a dear teacher. Hopefully my mileage may vary. I'm thinking they may not be fertile, since there was no other scapes open nearby...well, not within 3 feet. Could be selfed then. Option #1.
Don't even begin to think of other options, I'm already out of my league. :)

Which is one reason I'm thinking about just letting the pods stay uncollected in the garden. Scatter a few random empty pots or a drop cloth around and the seeds fall with the tree leaves, get collected and composted. So I check my compost pile next spring for seedlings? Wow. What a thought.
