I planted my first iris and fear I lopped them off too much

In the middle of planting them, I noticed with the tall leaves they were going to flop with the least breeze. What did I read? Where? Couldn't remember but dimly recalled seeing some lopped off so cut mine to about 3". Now they look bad.

Hope I didn't ruin them, that the roots will take hold and put out new shoots. I picked them up cheap at a plant sale but still hate to lose them.

I read too late in the FAQ that you should cut them down to 6 or 8".
