Penny Mac vs. Endless Summer and pruning
Comments (5)ES is a macrophylla, same as Penny Mac and blooms on old wood. Any pruning past mod-late summer and you may remove next years flower buds. ES was a slow starter for me. I planted 2 in early fall, one from 3gal., one from 1 gal. The following year, the larger one had 3 blooms, none on the 1 gal. 2nd year, about a dozen on the large one, still none on the small. Third year was charm! The large one produced 75-80 flowers and a few on the small one. Each year since, the larger plant has produced in excess of 100 flowers and the smaller one is trying to catch up. They usually begin blooming by Easter each year, but not so this year. I still don't have a flower bud on either. This past winter was very hard on macrophyllas and serratas. For the first time ever, I am having to remove dead canes on the majority of them, some have required the removal of all of the old canes. I don't expect to see many flowers on any of them this year. So goes the luck of a gardener! Rb...See MoreEndless trouble with Endless Summer Hydrangeas
Comments (4)Hi Erica, I'm thinking it was a combination of more fertilizer (which they don't need the first year), the insecticide spray, and the sun! Is it possible that he tender leaves did not like the spray on them and burned in the sun! You may have to cut them back and wait for new growth, but no more bug spray and limit the sun until they get used to it. New plants in pots look great when you buy them but they don't acclimate themselves to the elements for a while. I have a bed of 6 hydrangeas in shade most of the day but they get 2/3 hours of sun in early afternoon and this year we added 3 new plants to the planter and the flowers burned to a crisp on the new ones and the older ones that had been in the ground for a year or so sailed through the heat and sun with no problems! The temps went up to low to mid 90's for several days, and all the hydrangeas in my yard wilted from the heat but the flowers perked up in the evening. Don't be afraid to prune them back if necessary, it will thicken the plant for you and you should still get some blooms later on the remontant types. Good Luck! Comments (10)Here is my experience with them both. Last year I bought one of each at Lowes. I planted them 2 feet from each other, in the same type soil and same exposure. The Forever and Ever came with about 5 Blossoms and developed one more by the time frost came. The ES had about 3 blossoms and developed about 4 more before frost. This year, the Forever and Ever began growth earlier than the ES, and has it's first blossom turning blue now. The ES has two small blossoms(1/2" dia) forming now. But--here is the difference. Though the ES began growth later, it is now more than TWICE as tall as the Forever & Ever. I fully expect ES to produce many more blossoms than the Forever and Ever, which, to me, is not a vigorous grower. Also, the blue of the ES was more intense than the other, more beautiful, to my mind. So far, ES wins, but...they're still youngsters....See MoreForever & Ever -- Opinions Please
Comments (3)Hi -With no experience w/ ASB & PM & since I'm from a marginal zone, where protection for these beauties is a personal choice, of garden-slavery LOL! ... F&E in my piece of soil, proved quite impressive! ... Stronger canes to bear the 8"X10" blossoms - more like an up-side-down bowl than a ball, sepals are serrated/frillier & better able to handle sun/heat a bit better! Both barely bloomed in 2nd season (I suppose, working on roots). This 3rd yr, both ES in my experience were more floriferous (30+/bush) - F&E had 10 huge ones/bush. I protected all 4 of them due to, no blooms that 2nd season, I wanted to save old canes. Due to our difference in zones, I didn't think my observation matters. You shouldn't have any problems in your z7b but must protect fom sun & heat! For whatever its worth - Good luck!...See Morebobmark226
