Hydrangea paniculata 'Bombshell' is no bust
Comments (41)No, a color change suggests that the bloom is mature and spent. After several weeks, a white paniculata hydrangea bloom begins a progression of color changes that ends in a brown bloom, similar to the color changes observed in roses. If you lived in a southern location, you could try deadheading the bloom after it begins to change and see if you get new bloomage. Some paniculatas do that in the South but I have not seen anyone confirming that VS "reblooms" for them. Reblooming white mopheads (H. macrophylla) will produce new blooms if you deadhead the spent blooms but, I am not sure if they can grow in your zone/location because you do not have this information displayed. Normally, they have winter hardiness issues when planted in very cold zones. An experiment that just occurred to me: you might be able to lengthen the amount of time that it stays white if the shrub is relocated to a spot in brights full shade with no direct sunlight. Maybe. Just maybe that may lengthen the whites. The reason I say this is because of my Little Lime. Paniculatas Limelight and Little Lime have blooms that start green then turn white, a shade of pink and eventually end brown. My LL is located in bright, full shade so it never gets direct sun. As a result, I have noticed that the blooms stay green for a very, very long time. If Limelight is exposed to full sun conditions, the blooms turn white faster. But my LL did not get a-n-y whites the last two years (or maybe they appeared near the end of the Fall and I did not notice). My LL blooms went from green directly to a shade of pink. This year it seems to be going in the "same trajectory". The blooms opened in late June and, as of today, they remain green. So, I wonder if -maybe- VS blooms may stay white longer if not exposed to direct sunlight. You could try that and see what happens. Or maybe someone who already has VS in bright but full shade can chime in with their observations of how long it stays white under those conditions.....See MoreFirst paniculata in my collection that didn't bloom
Comments (9)Same here, I bought five from lowes for a total of $5.00 last year... I planted them in a mass, behind a white jamaquoi birch tree and placed wine and roses wigelia behind, and geranium rozanne in front, and karl forester grass off to the side of the wigelia. Only one of the five bloomed and it only had three flowers. Fortunately, the other plants bloomed spectacularly, so the bombshell played a more foundational role in the bed.. DO NOT BUY THIS PLANT TO BE A SHOW STOPPER FOCAL POINT. LITTLE LIME AND BOBO ARE MUCH BETTER SELECTIONS.. Buy this as a great informal mass deciduous shrub to anchor more floriferous plants around. I really like mine, but only in a mass. I bought 7 more from lowes for $7.00!! Really great yellow fall color right now!...See MoreMystical Flame Hydrangea
Comments (10)There are a bunch of new dwarf panicle hydrangea out for 2011/2012 season. These paniculatas are drought/salt tolerant with some help. Add some peat moss, mulch, water crystals and let nature do the rest in zones 4,5 and 6.First you should decide if you like the lace type panicle or the fuller panicle this will help you decide where to start. The lace type panicle bring winged insects galore bees, flies, hornets, etc. Most of these paniculata types are one trick plants with one bloom period and then yellow leaves. These are larger plants that will blow past the max size limit a bit.The dwarfs vary in form a little, the quality of the flower show is what is important. White flowers can be seen at night, reds fade away and get lost. These plants work best with foliage background plants like Black Velvet smokebush,Japanese maple,Miscanthus sinensis 'Variegatus' or Henry's Garnett sweetspire for daytime veiwing. Hydrangea Mysticalî Flame Hydrangea paniculata âÂÂBokratorchâ Video Mystical Flame My two cents, the habit of this plant is ho hum the leaves seem to be in the flower. It looks messy and the flower is a bit too lacy and sloppy. This one reminds me of a Rose of Sharon just a little weedy. When the flowers burn out what is really left. When Sept. first rolls around on the early bloomers that is the end of flower production. Here is a nearly complete list of the dwarf paniculatas out now.Starting with the best one i have seen so far Sweet Summer.I am a newbie, just sharing what i found while shopping for paniculata's. Comments (17)Bobo has become my favorite hydrangeas for the last 2 years. I have 2 planted in a full sun location in the fall of 2013, as 2 quarts (~ 1 ft tall) small plants ordered online since local stores did not carry them yet. Both gave nice and long blooms in 2014, and have been doing great ever since. The size is much more compact (~ 3'x3') so this is a big plus for my small chicago area lot. In spring time, I only sprinkle a little bit (1 tbs per palnt) of Miracle-Gro® Shake 'N Feed® All Purpose Continuous Release Plant Food. There are several kinds, I use the one with NPK 10-10-10. I don't typically use fertilizer but rely mostly on mulching well. I agree with NHBabs that these H. paniculatas need to have more sun for best performance. Mine is planted in the same full sun bed with cone flowers, Phlox and black eye Susan. I almost never water them so Bobo endures the summer heat and drought just as well as cone flowers, etc. I did notice that my neighbor's little Lime blooms much less as they are in a partial shade locations than my limelights (full sun). I understand the fun sun in zone 5 (chicago) may be different from other areas....See Moreluis_pr
