Hydrangea pruning question

How should a limelight hedge be pruned to help it connect faster? I've seen lots of info on how to prune Limelight into an upright, tree form. But I don't want that. I want my Limelights, spaced 4' apart, to connect as soon as possible and to stay connected forever. Wouldn't pruning them down to 2' X 2' create holes in the hedge every spring? If I don't want holes, even for a short period after pruning, would I just leave lateral branches unpruned so they connect with the lateral branches of neighbors?

How does the advice to select only 5 strong branches and to prune out the remaining twiggy branches adapt to a hedge? Does it even apply? Or is it only for people who want to create an upright plant? For my hedge, I'd rather have full, squat, rounded plants with flowers and leaves draped to the ground than upright tree-like plants that show bare legs.

Thanks,
