Where are my pink diamond tree blooms?

I bought and planted a pink diamond standard last summer. It was in full bloom and gorgeous all summer and into the fall. I pruned it as directed and it has healthy leaves. It never wilts like my other hydrangeas do but I have no sign of flowers yet. Is this because this is only the second year in the ground or do they bloom later? My endless summer planted at the same time is loaded with blooms and my peegees are blooming too. Am I doing something wrong?

We planted 7 of the pink diamond tree standards on June 1st of this year. They stood about 4-5 feet tall. They are just starting with the tiny buds. I cannot wait to see the blooms! I would think that within the next few weeks you should be seeing some development of buds. Sometimes the greenhouses "force" the blooms to sell the trees. After all they look so much nicer when in full bloom. Hopefully you'll be enjoying that soon.

I'm in NY in your zone and I was wondering the same thing yesterday. There are some tiny buds but I could swear last year they were farther along. This may teach me to really keep a journal instead of trying to remember.

Tree form may be a better description - relating to a plant grown with a single stem - as these plants are considered shrubs rather than trees. I have a number of hydrangea paniculata that I've grown into a tree form with the tallest being about 7 foot tall in mid summer growth - but I prune mine back every spring so I'm keeping them short. If not pruned annually, I would think the stems would be very prone to breaking. My experience with Pink Diamond is that it's a very vigorous grower with annual stem growth at least 3 foot. I see the same form with physocarpus opulifolius - Ninebark - being offered - especially Diablo. Marshall

knuttle...Some interesting reading if you do a search for...who introduced Prunus mume. Will give you answers re when it was introduced into this country. Root using softwood cuttings and rooting hormone. I have not tried rooting it in water but certainly an easy experiment to undertake. Must admit that I am a lazy propagator and mostly use the method I have posted a few times. Do a search on the Propagation Forum for "Toothpick Technique".

Oldroser, I am excited, I think it may be a shadblow, I've googled them and they look so much like my tree...except mine is pink. And a lot taller than they usually get apparantly (the wild ones I see tend to be under 20') although one site says they can reach 40' but that size is very rare. I also have never noticed fruits on it but that may be because the birds notice them first! I have a friend who is a botanist take look at the tree in bloom and she did not know what it was - I think I'll run the possibility of a genetic variation of the shadblow by her. Whatever it is, it sure is beautiful. Our wild apples are not blooming yet either but will be soon. I love spring!

Questions about pruning into a tree: 1. Do you let the hydrangea grow as a shrub for awhile to let it get established and then gradually shape it over time as it gets larger? 2. I've had 3 pink diamonds for 3 yrs now. Buds start to form in mid to late July normally so you're fine. A very hardy, drought tolerant, fast growing, large hydrangea! I have the shrubs....not trees.

PD is not an early bloomer so, provided you have not pruned it very recently (ie, while it was developing its invisible flower buds), I would not panic. The further north that you are, the later it will bloom. End of July or early August should be 'normal'.

PD is a paniculata and they develop flower buds much later than macrophyllas like Endless Summer. Some paniculatas like Quick File start to bloom "early". Others like Tardiva bloom "much later". So when it finally blooms, make a note on next year's wall calendar (or in an electronic calendar like Microsoft Outlook, etc) so you know when to expect this in future years.

As mentioned above, bloom times on their first or second year can be unreliable. Post pictures when you finally get blooms!!!

That being said I wouldn't mind seeing a blooming standard pink diamond.

Luis, I am not criticizing, but you commented on an 8 year old post. Now this thread is active again. Where did you come across it? I ask because these old posts pop up out of nowhere, someone comments and now there's a new thread based on an really old question.

It bothers me that people spend time answering a question when the poster may no longer be using GW. It's wasting our time.

It displayed on the top of the Hydrangea Forum's Webpage. I had replied to another post and clicked on the link to look at the forum's webpage again and there it was. Maybe near the top 5-10 entries. Not sure why it appeared there. Sorry, vignewood.
