I live in the Indianapolis area. Looking for the best locations either on line or Indianapolis area from which to purchase hostas.

mail order... i liked white oak, naylor creek and a bunch others back when i bought hosta ...

hallstons is in my area... nice place ... great plants ...

I've been very pleased with the hostas and other perennials from Bluestone Perennials (www.bluestoneperennials.com). The plants come in rather deeper pots than usual, their online catalog is excellent (with good searching controls, plant info, and pictures), and useful coupons with the shipments.

Welcome welcome! Bridgewood Gardens in Strasburg has open house dates: Friday through Sunday, May 17, 18, and 19 Saturday and Sunday, June 7 and 8 Saturday and Sunday, June 21 and 22 I have purchased from them and their plants are healthy and have done well for me, but I have actually preferred several other mail-order sources. I only have personal experience with Hallsons, Naylor Creek, and Green Mountain, and they are all A++. But if you are looking for an in-person experience, those Bridgewood open house dates would be fun! If you ever have occasion to be in the York, PA area, there is a really cool place called The Hosta Hideaway. I could wander there for hours! Wade and Gatton opened back up last year. Stopped doing the per eye pricing and just sold the whole pot for the 1-2 eye price. I haven't heard what they were doing this year. The problem with Hornbaker is I ordered some small Hosta and when I planted them in front of my other new medium and large Hosta they were just too big. I know the other ones will catch up, but it will be a couple years at least. All new plants this year except the tall 1st and Ten on the left and the little variegated one in the back. Hornbaker sent the 3 in front and the one in the middle right of the fern. The blue in back will be one of my largest Hosta (Gentle Giant) also came from Hornbaker.Here's the whole new bed. The 3 bigger plants near the middle are not new this year.

The word "guaranteed" is not realistic IMOP. You can tell early in the season if a hosta has HVX, but since the virus may take time (years) to show up, or never show, I think that only the Great Celestial Grower could "guarantee" that HVX would not ever be present. Would the growers replace a plant that had HVX in a growing season? - I would expect so, and I would certainly ask that question before buying. It is their reputation and livelihood on the line. Of my 400+ hostas, about half have come from this area -MA,CT,NH,VT,&ME -do NOT have HVX, and I have not seen HVX anywhere except in the box stores and in one large garden center, where they immediately pulled the hostas when I pointed it out. HVX was news to them. nehosta.org will have an expanded list of local (member) growers soon (probably after I get back from the AHS Convention in St. Louis). Don't forget the Hosta Show at Tower Hill on July 12-13- there will be 3 fine vendors there. Send an email if you want a brief list of names- I'll do what I can off the top of my head. It would help to know where you live - obviously I'm willing to travel to buy hostas!

Okay, in a round about way, I found your blog, and then your "location". LOL So I can give you some places to look near you and far from you.. Two of my favorite West Coast Suppliers (far) LOL Brambleberry~WA and OregonTrailsoaps~OR Candle Cocoon (her regular line) has alot of great multi purpose scents. (meaning B&B and soap and candles) Fabulous oils they are a bit pricey, but you don't need nearly as much as other companies (mid way~she's in WI) Nature's Garden ~Ohio Southern Scentsations~MI East Coast side...hmmmm Fragrance Oil Heaven~NY Candlewic~PA All the ones I've listed in the body of this thread, I've either done business with, or know friends who use them as well. Mail Order: Hands down -- Hallsons definitely. Chris and Brian provide big, healthy, field-grown plants.

The owners of both of these nurseries know about HVX, so you can be assured of healthy plants.

I just received my first order from Hallstons yesterday. Chris was so great on the phone. I really wanted Spring Fling, but he said they were gone and the ones he had were too little. My box arrived promptly (from one side of the country to the other) and it was literally the hotest day of the year, 95 degrees. I wasn't even home to get the babies out of the box until evening. When I opened the box, I found absolutely beautiful hostas including a freebie, the Spring Fling I wanted!!! It wasn't a little one either compared to what I have received from other mail order places. So thanks to Chris at Hallstons for being so sweet!! I will be back ;-)

The other goodies I ordered were Jade Cascade, Fire Island and Sea Fire. Needed more good yellows. Jade Cascade's roots must have been growing to China. Nice huge plant standing straight up and tall tonight in it's new home.

H A L L S O N S. I'll never buy mail order from anyone else, and I told Chris that - he actually called me re a question I emailed him about!!!!! Who would do THAT! Like sandykk, I've never seen such huge root systems via mail order, nor such beautifully packaged plants. Nothing was even BENT! Also got Jade Cascade and the roots were over 18 inches long and there were about a hundred. And of course, I got the bonus plant. OH - he also only charged me half-price for one because it was only two eyes and smaller than he wanted to present.
