Just got a Pee Wee Oakleaf..what to expect?

It is a white Hydrangea quercifolia. It has been in the ground about 2 weeks, and although it looks very happy, there is no growth yet. How long till I see some? It says on the tag it will be 5x6 when mature, and it is in a perfect spot to accomodate that, but right now it just looks like a little 2 foot thing lost in the yard! :) Are they fast growers? Do they need a lot of fertilizer?

5 x 6 ??? Are you sure it's a PeeWee? That is roughly the size of a mature non-dwarf oakleaf. I thought PeeWee is supposed to be around 3 x 4 at best.
In the south, my oakleaf has grown very quickly but I am told that up north they are slow growers at least at the start. What your oakleaf needs most is good drainage as wet feet are the worst enemy of the oakleaf.....yg

well, i tried to find my old post "wilting of dwarf oakleaf" but it is gone. i know i posted when there was new growth.
sorry, i can't remember now. mine was planted in spring, arrived dry, and i fought some wilting for awhile. it arrived with some flower buds which i promptly pinched off. it will develop its root system before new leaves. mine is still barely larger than when i planted. however, it has been very dry.
perhaps we will learn together!

Miss Lucinda, I don't know how far along your spring is, but if you will still be getting any freezes, it's MUCH better that your 'PeeWee' wait to leaf out. Frosts are a major killer of new leaves and of flower buds. If the cambium layer, the layer just under the bark, is still green - scratch gently at the bark and see - then the shrub is still alive and will leaf out when it - and the ground - is warm enough, hopefully avoiding any late frosts. Generally, most newly-planted shrubs spend their first year in the ground growing a good root system - very few flower heavily, if at all. That the leaves stayed small is somewhat worrisome - did you water it deeply, with the equivalent of an inch of rain per week? If not, then it may have been lacking water. Be sure to keep it watered this summer, and in dry spells next year as well, and it should, if still alive now, be fine. Mulching, as widely as possible, no deeper than 4" and no mulch in the inch or so next to the trunk will help with evening out fluctuating moisture levels.

I planted an Oakleaf in the fall, in my MI z5 location. I did baby it the first couple years by putting plastic over the cage around it. Used an old plastic shower curtain so it go plenty of light, but not the terrible wind we have all winter. I also mulched heavily and left lots of oak leaves piled around the bottom of the cage. It came thru the winter well. They do like lots of water so make sure it has plenty all summer. It grew each year and has gotten much larger, blooming the second summer. I quit wrapping it last winter, just left the leaves piled under it that blew there. Had the best growth and bloom ever this year, very flowery. It is a dwarf type, should end up no larger than 6ft. Plant is about 5ft now, 4th year from a gallon plant. Very full. So if you can get a deal on fall nursery stock, I would buy and plant in fall. Plan to baby it for a while, then let it take off. A five gallon plant will be half grown, almost no waiting for size!! Think of it as $10 a gallon, which is CHEAP for good wine! If that is the ONE you must have, I guess you need to pay. You should get a good warranty with it for the price, not discounted like sale items. If it fails, you get your money back or replacement in spring. If it grows, you are miles ahead with winter-grown roots working for you! I would go for it. I was just looking at PeeGee trees, not that big, 2gallon for the same price. Yeah, I bought it!

There is nothing visible on the screen whatsoever. One day, when I tried to turn the TV on, the screen remained black, I could hear a faint ticking sound and there was a burning electronic smell. I opened the TV and saw the burn marks I decribed above. Prior to posting, I found another article on this forum that had a very similar problem.... "The other day I was watching tv I got up and went to the other room and came back. The TV was off and the room smelled like burnt plastic or rubber. The tv would not come back on so I unplugged it and took the back off to see if I could see anything burnt. The only thing is (on the back right hand side of the circut board) what I think is a capacitor. Its small, round, and light blue. When I plug the tv in and turn it on, all I get is a faint tick. Every 5th or 6th tick that capacitor flashes and burns a little more of the blue wrapping off. I can't tell what the specifications on the thing are because most of writing is burned off. Other than that, I see nothing at all." you recommended that that person replace C423 -- which is curiously, near my burnt resistors. If it's only been in the ground 2 weeks, give the poor thing a break!! Growth does not happen overnight. Newly planted shrubs and trees will take a season or two to settle in and develop a healthy root system before putting out much in the way of noticeable top growth. 'Pee Wee' should top out at about 4 feet and perhaps somewhat wider but it is most commonly seen in around a 3'x3' size range. All its parts are scaled down from a full size oakleaf, which can easily reach 8 feet unpruned and half again as wide.

BTW, all oakleaf hydrangeas have white flowers although they may age to a soft rosy pink.

LOL@gardengal! OK, I will give it a break. I just went out there and looked at it again, and it looks very happy. I guess I will have to be patient. :)

I agree - be patient!

FWIW - oakleafs in my zone take their sweet time to get fully established and put on a lot of growth. I've heard they grow rapidly in warmer zones, but that doesn't seem to be the case up here. Still, patience is a virtue, and once fully established oakleafs are BEAUTIFUL in both foliage and flower. Well worth the wait. :)
