Is growing under the snow normal?

Last summer I planted some new varieties of irises.

This winter we had two feet of snow over the irises.

This week the snow is finally melting. I went out to check on the new irises and daylilies. I normally cut the dead folage from last fall in the spring.

Much to my shock, poking through the snow several of the new irises are green, about 5 inches high and growing.

Sorry I am a novice to irises, is this normal for irises?
