Japanese Maple Problems

i had a japanese maple planted three weeks ago in a mostly shady area. i am concerned that it did not get enough weater initially for the first several days. it has been getting alot of water for the past two weeks. there is some sign of a few leaves dying off and some of the branches are baron (no leaves at all).

1) will the tree survive if it did not get enough water initially?

2) would the lack of water cause some of the roots to die-off

3) is there anything to look for or do to salvage the tree if it starts dying off?
