Kaleidoscope

HI,

I live in CT and have Kaleidoscope hydranagea. It dies every winter and grows back in the spring. I get only couple flowers on it. Should I be wrapping it in the burlap for the winter? Does anyone get the proofusion of flowers like depicted on the picture that came with it?

If you are in zone 6 or less, you will most likely get a better show if you winter protect it....yg

I have three of these which I planted last spring as babies purchased from Spring Hill. They grew a bit, they didn't flower, but they're still small.

Never having had them before, I wasn't sure if I should have pruned them or not, and I didn't. They're MAYBE 8 inches tall now and have no foliage on the old growth, but there is plenty of new growth sprouting at ground level.

I keep watching those dead looking branches wondering if they'll sprout too, which they haven't as of yet? Or does this puppy die back to the ground and re-grow each year?

I didn't respond initially to your post because I don't grow TK. Visiting the Lily Farm when the first crop of TK seedlings were blooming, I have to say they were eye-catching! When you look at the AHS database in an advanced search with TK as parent, there are 44 registrations from TK through 2012. I'm sure we will see more! Jack was hanging onto his TK seedlings when I tried to purchase one. The thing about a flower like TK is that it opens new horizons in hybridizing. In that sense it isn't a "finished flower", but it is "new horizons"! The only thing close to it at the time on the Lily Farm was Cosmic Design. Jack wouldn't let me purchase it because he felt it was unfinished. Kind of funny when you look back on incidents like this. I hope others respond as to TK's garden worthiness.

That looks like what HH describes when he sees a plant that is suffering from significant root competition. Dig it up and see if you have a lot of competing roots to pull out of it. I don't think what you are seeing is a result of the plants genetics, but rather an environmental issue. Steve

Never expected this kind of applause for my seedling! It is a very healthy plant in a big pot - I am going to divide it in the fall when its cooler and see how well it grows. Have never introduced anything but it might be fun with this one. I have dabbed its pollen on quite a few things, cant recall offhand what took, but I know it is pollen fertile. I didn't try any pollen on the plant as I want it to grow well [and sure don't want to lose it!]. Its name is Cosmic Whisper and I will post later on if I think it is strong enough to be introduced. And thank you all so very much for your kind comments!! I have a small plant of Ghost Whispers that I was able to come by a couple of years ago, but it hasn't bloomed yet and don't think it will this year but the plant is growing well and maybe it will next year so I can use pollen. Meanwhile......it will be fun to see what Cosmic Whisper's babies will do! Judi

I bought six Kaleidoscope Hydrangea from Spring Hill in 2001 they all died except for two. This is the first it has had blooms. It's about 4 ft tall and full of blooms. I had to move it to several locations to find a spot it likes. I've discovered that it likes morning sun and afternoon shade. It doesn't like the hot scorching afternoon sun. I'm in New Hampshire zone 5. I don't cover it in the winter but it is protected by my front steps.
