what has 'sheared' the stems at ground level???

aaaggghhh!!! Looks like something just came along and 'sheared' my Hydrangea stems at ground level?? What could have done this?? Nothing looks eaten. Could deer have trampled over it and made it look like this?? There is just one stem left standing. (They, the deer are getting back at me for putting that terrible tasting stuff on it).

Prior to this, I did see a couple of holes on a few leaves...slugs??? Would/could slugs 'shear' the stems this way?? HELP!!

Thanks,

Linda
