Can I Grow These Crop Alltogether?

Hello Everyone,

Please suggest, can I grow all these crops alltogether:

I am going to manufacture L=20 x W=16 x H x 7-8 feet wooden plastic tunnel. Tunnel will be fully exposed to full sun all day long & there will be five windows for ventelation measuring 1.5 X 1.5 square feet each, among which three will be at the top of roof & remaining two will be at the 16 feet wide side facing two exhaust fans at the other end.

I want to know can i grow hydroponically

1: Parthenocarpic cucumbers +

2: Tomatoes +

3: Bitter Gourds +

4: Melons or Watermelons or Round Gourds

(Four crops total)

at the same time. Summer heat is coming ahead & outside temperature may raise to 45-48 maximum but i will be able to lower down the temperature any where between 25 or as per requirement.

Please let me know can i grow above crops all together?

What could be possible benefits?

What could be possible drawbacks?

Please share your experience in this concern.

These crops can all be grown in hydro and they do well. Make sure you use a different res for each crop as to ensure proper growing variables for each plant. Maintain heat at night and allow ventilation during day, keeping temps in the 78f range. Make sure res temps stay around 72-75f to prevent mold and other nuisances growing.

These crops are all heavy feeders and drinkers. In hydro, you must remember that the larger the reservoir, the slower variations in ph, tds, temps etc will be. You want that.

You do not mention the type of system you plan on using, but i recommend a diy dwc system for those....large res size and lots and lots of oxygen to the root zone will give you crops that will leave you amazed

I am new to hydro so need to know the following too:

1: Yes, I know these all crops can be grown in hydro but I am talking about to grow them in single
20 x 16 feet greenhouse alltogether at the same time.
For example: If all the four crops can be sown on 1st May 2012....? Plz re-confirm.

Moreover should I maintain greenhouse temp at 78f range for each four crops from seedlings to full maturity or there will be some variables?

2: If the pollen grains (cross pollination) of any kind of vegetable effect any other kind of vegetable resulting in deformed fruit shapes, un-uniformity or show adverse reaction in any way..?
For example cross pollination among tomato, bitter gourd or watermelon?

4: I have an idea to use a fan for a pollination purposes. I want to temporarily place a fan under targeted plant & blow air upwards for 30-60 secs daily that may spread pollen grains in a small scale backyard greenhouse. Please comment.

I have a diagram in a link below & that is self explanatory.

5: Is it necessory to maintain humidity in greenhouse....? I don't want to use eveporationg cooling pads in my greenhouse. If humidity is necessory how much average percentage it should be at for all four crops grown at same time in a single greenhouse...?

Sorry but I have to agree, forget the peas. It is far too late for them but next year you can try growing them in February in your zone. And 12" pots aren't really big enough to grow much in - maybe some lettuce or maybe 3-4 onions or 8-10 salad onions. Peppers and tomatoes need their own pot - 1 each - and a much bigger one - 5 gallon bucket size is the minimum recommendation and bigger than that is better. You might want to do some reading over on the Container Gardening forum here as they can best advise on the sizes of containers you'll need for each vegetable and the potting mix to fill them with. Maxio, I hope you're getting your questions answered for you. I think Nance has done an excellent job of pulling together some background information to consider regarding your problem with what to do with the Koi pond water. Also, Gary and NancyM's suggestions are very helpful as well. Cityworm, rather than hijack this thread further away from it's original posting why don't you open a thread and present your case about what you view is the correct way to buffer the water and how you operate your Koi pond. I for one like to learn new things. I would be very interested in your point of view, the logic for your stance as well as whatever scientific basis you have for your practices. Crop to grow using ONLY fluorescents?

40 watt compact fluorescent lights go for about 10 dollars & they put out about 2600 lumens. You can pick up clamping shop-light fixtures already wired with extension cords & a round metal reflector for another 5-7 bucks a piece. Both of these can be found at lowes or home depot. The shop lights are on the same isle as the extension cords. They are cheap, come in both blue & red spectrums, & work great. Since they are small, they are easy to re-position wherever you need them. Remember, the key to using fluorescent lights is keeping the lights within a couple inches of the plant, like 1-3" max. The light intensity decreases exponentially as you move the lights farther away. Still, nothing beats an HID lamp. If you want a LOT of good info about growing plants indoors under lights, don't be scared to check out some of the other "herbal" growing boards. Those guys really know what they're doing.

Marla: I'm not a market gardener or farmer and likely never will be. A little over a year ago, a friend introduced me to the alternative production techniques of small farms and market gardens. I visited farms and seed exchanges, read some of Michael Pollan's work, and finally realized that I believe very strongly in what you all are doing. So my friend and I asked ourselves how we could help increase the number of small farmers and market gardeners utilizing sustainable techniques. We heard from several farmers that making a living long-term is hard, so we started wondering if we could make tools that would increase the likelihoood of financial success for more farmers and gardeners and thus keep the movement growing. And frankly, a larger base of more financially successful small farmers and gardeners will develop more political clout which could have many positive effects. My friend's dream is to move his family to a small farm and make a living (he's a small-scale gardener), but he's several years away from that. I don't have formal training in accounting but have always had a strong interest in that area (especially budgeting). We're both computer programmers so we combined our ideas and created a web-based application that implemented some of the ideas discussed in this thread. We did this during evenings and weekends which was quite a challenge since we both have kids (and very supportive spouses). So we've been asking these types of questions in many places for over a year. We still have a ways to go, but we are at a point where we're going to test the basics of our web app and refine it after seeing what is useful and what isn't. Who knows where this will go, but it would be neat if we found the right combination to help farmers and gardeners have a higher likelihood of long term financial success. AZ the temperature ranges K mentions above are ideal. If they vary from those temps, the plants will still grow. the farther they are from those temps the slower, but(in general) the plants will still grow. Good luck keeping a greenhouse with full sun in the summer anywhere near 78ÃÂ°F
Humidity is not critical for plants. In high heat, a lower humidity is actually better as it allows the plant to transpire more water to keep cool.
Cross pollination normally won't occur across species and even when it does occur within the species, the result is seen in the next generation of plant (from the seeds) not in the fruit of the current season.
you can start all those crops at the same time, but the days to maturity for each may be different.
also, you can grow them all in the same nutrient if they all like the same relative strength of nutrient. Just recognize that in combining them all in the same reservoir, you won't me maximizing the nutrients. some plants will use more of some nutrients than others. the least available needed nutrient is what will restrict the plants growth.
