How Many Colors Do Your Leaves Have? Post 'em!

There is a really cool page in newest edition of The Hosta Journal that has a close-up shot of a leaf from H. 'Broad Band'. The page is titled "How many colors can you find on this hosta leaf?" and nine various shades of greenish-bluish hues can be seen. (not counting the water spots) Add the white coloring of the margin, and the total is ten. I have a lot of pics of my hostas accumulated from the last three seasons, but so far, (haven't looked at ALL my pics so far) this pic of 'Guardian Angel' seems to be the most varied, with five shades/colors I can discern.

How many colors/shades can be seen in your most colorfully-variegated plants? Post 'em here!

Light green with white streaks (Striptease)

Orange, as in marmalade

Blue, reminds me of Hawaii

Dreamy yellow on this Queen.

White to cream to green to dark, dark green almost blue in person...a Temptation.

Green to chartreuse to cream with great expectations.

A light bruiser which certainly has sum and substance

Pastel colors hazed together in a promise of June.

Hadspen Tasmania is a blue place without this.

A victory of greens and creams

A golden meadow of delightful triple greens.

Dark green and white and ready for a fight..Minuteman

No time to tidy up, just a quick walk.

Haven't counted the colors, but I think it might compete! This is El Capitan.

Re: curled rose slugs. Well they certainly uncurled fast when I threw them into the soap suds and water and sank to the bottom of the measuring cup. Eventually they went bye bye due to it so just poured the water out with them in it on the other side of the fence. My Shield rose had one curled up inside the blossom but I pulled it out of there. I think there must have been more eating it but no more as in that section of the garden out the back there are robins and catbirds and chickadees all feasting on them. Wish I could make a sign pointing to the ones out the front saying this way for more goodies. Pulled off 3 more today and 10 the other day. Same plant I think I am getting the upper hand. I also sprayed it with the safer spray Sat. night that one will not harm the bees only the bad bugs. Also won't harm the flowers either.

I wasn't much enamoured with singles but i planted dainty bess, goldenwings, sparrieshoop together on a whim. I have 3 db,1 sparrieshoop, 3 goldenwings(one was mistake). now i couldn't b without them. db is the only ht i have (is she really a ht?) that has eliminated any predjudice i had before. i am thinking about getting white wings which is a sport of db, not golden wings. they have done rather well in all the heat and humidity here.

Stacey, have you don't anything different? I think w/change of seasons, it's normal to lose some leaves..Or has this been happening, since you got it? I can see if you summered it outdoors then brought in during autumn..this is normal..Anytime there's a change, a person is bound to find yellow leaves on their citrus. Can you post a pic of your lemon? Toni

I remember finding a recipe on rose forum...Lets me see if I can find it now.. Here is one post I kept: Angela, I do what Pete does, just put a cup or so of alfalfa pellets under the mulch and close in to the base of the plant, and then soak with a little water. But, to get to your question, a good recipe to start off with is probably the original recipe for alfalfa tea, as described by Howard Walters, the Rosarian Rambler, in an ARS article: "Alfalfa tea is a great spring or fall potion that doesn't interfere with normal seasonal processes. Alfalfa tea releases a growth hormone that makes everything work better. Just add 10 to 12 cups of alfalfa meal or pellets to a 32-gallon plastic garbage can (with a lid), add water, stir and steep for four or five days, stirring occasionally. You may also "fortify" with 2 cups of Epsom salts, 1/2 cup of SequestreneÂ® (chelated iron, now called Sprint 330) or your favorite trace element elixir. The tea will start to smell in about three days. Keep the lid ON. Use about a gallon of mix on large rose bushes, 1/3 that much on mini's. And keep the water going. When you get to the bottom of the barrel, add water to fill it up again! One load of meal or pellets will brew up two barrels full, but add more fortifiers for the second barrel. You'll see greener growth and stronger stems within a week." I stir the "witch brew" almost every day...Keep it or 3-7 days, and then water everything with it- other plants besides roses will appreciate the "potion". Gardeners from upnorth recommend using it a few times a year, but I use it here a lot more often. I like to put a trashcan out in the rain, so it gets filled up. Then, add the pellets and wait for it to brew. Hope it helps :) Olya

I get 8; a real kaleidoscope of color there HH.

Even some of the more colorful 'June' leaves have 4-7 colors.

The leaves on Barbara Ann were looking very colorful today. I count five- light green, dark green, light blue, dark blue, and white. This is so pretty before it starts to drawstring, boo.

Don, that is a beautiful photo of your GA! I received a division from a neighbour last year in trade for helping her rip out an extremely invasive ground cover. I was so eager for GA to emerge this spring. Can you blame me? I find the form of the leaves and colours of this hosta to be beautiful, simply beautiful. The colours are getting more pronounced each passing day.

Indeed, Jo. I do love GA, some of my favorite variegation on a hosta.

These are really great pics, everyone. El Capitan, what can I say, Hostahosta! Wow, that's incredible variegation.

Simply wunnerful pictures. I'm adding El Capitan to the top of my order list, right above all the new fragrants.

If somebody has Photoshop, don't they count the colors in a picture? Also, some of the enlargements/closeups remind me of cross stitch or needlepoint. They'd make beautiful needlework.

I also like the Confused Angel. I'll have to find my new Guardian Angel to see what the heck its been doing for the last month since it arrived. (See, I need to keep the new guys corralled so I can become familiar with them.)

Please keep adding. This is like the tricolor thread on steroids.
