Hi Folks, Sorry I haven't been back, but "stuff" got in the way. I harvested the scapes froze most of them, a few got substituted for green onions in "mongolian beef." Weird thing, we've been harvesting and eating scapes for a long time, these were the harshest and strongest tasting we've encountered? Normally they taste like a green onion with garlic overtones, these were....tough, chewy, and STRONG. Most hadn't formed a circle yet, so they weren't too far gone. Perhaps another aspect of last years "no winter." Dug a couple of heads, they were OK, but not fully developed, about what I'd expect this early, but the scapes were early. What i'm wondering is if we're in for an old fashioned "drought." Plants have a way of knowing and send up seed pods and things early when that happens. I do know that I've been watering the garden for a couple of weeks and that usually doesn't happen till the end of june. Thanks for the responses. Ev

I saw scapes yesterday while I was walking around the beds. Some are ones that probably could be showing scapes -Extra Earlies, such as Lemon Lily and Egytian Queen. I also have scapes on Prairie Blossoms, and had them very early last year, and one something like George has described on Emmaus. The scape lookes like it's coming out of the ground next to two very tiny fans. The main fan, that was planted last fall is much larger. We'll have to see what happens. My irises are all blooming at least a week to two weeks ahead of schedule, and I have buds on two, two year old dwarf delphiniums. Lots and lots of things are blooming early here this year. Linda

Maryl, These were planted last year and the seeds came up this year. Most of them were seeds my neighbor had collected from her blooms the year before. They are prolific self sowers, and do their own winter sowing (in spades!) as you can see. I don't think you would call them perennials, just self re-seeders. Thanks, Mantis. I love that rose. Jean and Lisa. That vine is about four or five years old. I bought it and it was beautiful the first year, but I left it out, and it froze, and I assumed died that winter. In the spring, it went into the compost pile and I noticed green a few weeks later on it; a lot of new shoots, so I pulled it out and planted it and it bloomed beautifully that spring. It goes in the green house each winter after that...if it wanted to live that much, it deserved help. It always a lovely vine even when I put it in the green house in the late fall, and doesn't go dormant unless I withhold water. Lisa, I have the red honeysuckle and this Mandavella, but most vines I have had tend to start growing rampantly and are tough to confine, so I don't do many...but there is a stephanotis vine in the greenhouse that was bought it as a twig, (you know those little two inch cube pots) and it is huge now, and it doesn't like being anywhere else, but the greenhouse, It bloomed beautifully this year (first bloom season) Go figure. I really don't know how to really treat it. kay

Gotta be magic dust! I was out counting tonight and I actually have 3 new scapes coming up on my new Maryott plants. Janet Benz, Larry Grace, and Amber Nichole. Seriously guys these have been in the ground FIVE full days! I still can't believe it. I should have some pics to post soon. I'm sure they will be greatly appreciated! :-)
