adventureland and purple loosestrife?

just out of curiosity, but we were at adventureland this past week, and i noticed they have (what i believe to be) purple loosestrife in a lot of their landscaping. either i don't know what it looks like or else they have clumps of it everywhere. i thought that was a no-no. i may be way off, but i was just wondering.

I bet that's what it is. Just recently in the latest Garden Gate magazine there was garden plans featuring Lythrum. It said something about one kind being a sterile variety. It just looked like ordinary
loosestrife to me. I loaned the magazine ,so can't check on it.Heck, I see it all over.Iris

I thought the white was the only one it was ok to grow. If there's a well behaved purple and it does well, I'd like to know what it is and who's got it. Thanks.

Interesting, the apparent lack of a need for substantiation of the claim that purple loosestrife cultivars, actually located in typical garden situations, can lose their self-incompatability (viz the inability to self-fertilize). The Manitoba study involved experimentally planting 'Morden Pink' along natural waterways. In other words, it indicates, but doesn't prove that purple loosestrife cultivars planted in garden situations can be prone to this problem. Below; actual proof. Picture; Nov 7, 2011. The garden is in King City, Ontario. The cultivar ('Rosy Gem') has been cut down, prior to removal. You can see the line of purple loosestrife seedlings below the edge of the lawn. So far, I've only seen this in gardens with sprinkler systems or which were otherwise kept well watered; matches the waterways bit. That Liatris spicata or it's cultivars are a match for the show put on by (or I'd say the beauty of) various purple loosestrife cultivars is, as far as I'm concerned, a joke. On the other hand, garden-generated evidence for avoiding the use of horticultural purple loosestrife (where legal) is in. Sorry bees.

Lobelias have alternate leaves and often a rosette of basal leaves when young. Purple loosestrife has opposite leaves and a squarish stem, and do not have many basal leaves.

Sorry for he misunderstanding - I don't grow the eupatorium, but it grows wild along the edges of a lake where I work. I consider it a swamp/marsh plant. I've collected seeds, but none have grown for me. & I'm guessing very few - if any - grow the loosestrife, because of above stated probs.

I didn't. My neighbor had one stragling little stem in her yard. Neither of us knew what it was. (We had this convo just last season). She said it came back for a few years and she never pulled it. Lo and behold, it started growing in my yard last summer. Like I said, I had planted Astilbe and assumed that is what was coming up so I let it grow. My astilbe never came up apparently. So here it's spring and I'm reading up on proper pruning for my plants and I identified the thing. Funny, I mentioned it to the hortoculturist at the nursery and she didn't bat an eye and actually had some for sale! I didn't take a close look so I don't know if it was purple or not, but wither way,.... wth?

I don't think it's a no no legally to have it. I think it's a no no legally to sell it or import/export it from the state. Anyone know for sure?

My BIL works for the DNR and so far as it being in natural areas it's a HUGE no no. They pull it out by the truckload. Not sure about a contained variety. He said he'd seen it in greenhouses and nurserys. I can't imagine they'd sell it if it were illegal, but one never knows!

The sterile varieties do not set seed, but they will pollinate other varieties. It's best not to plant it regardless of whether it's sterile or not. I found a list of plants that are good replacements for it in your garden if you want something that looks similiar.

Thanks, "GiantSlug," for a great link. I love finding lists of substitutes, and I really appreciate the education to prevent lythrum from becoming an even larger problem.
