Hello and help with ID needed

Hi hosta friends! It's been a while since I've visited the forum. I have quite a few hosta varieties in my shade garden. I started collecting hostas in 2005, and at one time I had over 200 different varieties. Over the years I've lost some, but many of them are thriving after the very rainy year we had last year in NC. Some of the ones I still have are struggling and could benefit from being moved, no doubt. Over the winter I got the bright idea to pull all of my labels out of the ground, and now I'm sorry I did without first documenting what was where. I recently sent my aunt a bunch of divisions and thought I could remember all the names, but that didn't work out so well for me :) I will share some pics of hostas that I am hoping I can get some help with the ID. I am also planning to share pics do some of my favorites. The photo included in this post is the first one I need help IDing. I thought the name was Peter Pan for some reason, but I'm pretty certain that is incorrect. Thanks in advance, and I am looking forward to hanging out here on Garden Web again!

Lavendar, you are so right, this plant is not Peter Pan. And that is about all I can do to help you. I have seen nothing like your hosta. It is a beauty too.

How long did you say you've owned this one? It has my favorite variegation and a yellow middle. Someone will be along soon with suggestions or the correct answer right off the top. Amazing how that works.

Hope to see you around more often. We have several folks from NC on the forum still. Always glad for another,

Thanks for the warm welcome, moccasinlanding! I got this one sometime between 2006 and 2008. I really love this hosta, and I'm looking forward to getting an ID :) I have no doubt someone here will recognize it!

Yeppers, a canna. You can just dig up the rhisomes, knock the dirt off and store it cool, but it will be OK in a pot too. I had a funny story about these tough plants. They can, of course, be grown from seed and one year I had started a run of them in the g'house. After they'd germinated and were potted, I pitched the soil into the compost and it found its way to my vegetable garden eventually. It must have been ten years later, I see this familiar foliage coming up in the rows of tomato plants, and it's a tropicana canna. It's now in a pot, much like your pot, inside a g'house overwintering. BTW canna seed, sometimes called Indian shot is viable for up to a century. We had a large water cistern built into a hill to store spring water overflow, and when the dozer moved the soil to install it, a year later canna were all over the place coming up wild. A couple down the road whose family owned this farm said their mother had cannas in that area in the 1930s. The dormant seeds must have been buried for fifty years before the disturbance of the soil allowed them to germinate.

Welcome! In the 1st pic, the larger one in front is an Echeveria. Will have to wait till it grows out a bit-see if color changes with season-maybe figure out the species. In the 2nd pic, the one with a broken top looks like an xGrapto-something (intergeneric, Graptopetalum w/something else). The one behind it is a Sedum...perhaps S. adolphii or ax xGraptosedum. 3rd pic, the 2 look like either types of xPachyveria or xGraptoveria. 4th you said you don't need ID'd, but I'll agree with Karen, the larger one is Echeveria elegans. The smaller looks like E. lilacina to me. Do you have an ID on it?

I am pretty well convinced that it is The President, although several look a lot like it. I took a closer look at the center and it is more white than yellow and although the tips looked purple, even in person, looking very closely they are a very dark red. The flower color varies quite a bit in intesity. The larger/older ones are lighter and the smaller/newer ones are a distincly deeper purple. There are faint white "stripes" on the large petals towards the middle. I am not sure if the color fades over time or from exposure to the sun, or if the difference in shades is only related to the size of a particular bloom. There is no pink on any of the flowers. My biggest remaining question is how you all seemed to know it was a variety requiring light pruning without knowing for sure which one it was. My other remaining question is if there is any way to encourage fullness. I want one of those clematis that bloom from the ground to top of the mailbox and envelopes the entire mailbox, like others I have seen. That was my guess as well. I just posted a pic of a very large Emerald Ruff Cut from the gardens of Plant Delights in another thread. Take a look at that one, it's a beaut. Welcome!

That was my knee-jerk guess too, without even reading your text.

It's a slow grower regardeless of where you put it. But yours is lovely!

Thanks, Karen, Melissa & funn - I'm positive this is the correct ID now :) It was actually The Plant Delights post that confirmed it for me, and that is where I purchased it a few years back.

Isn't that what its name was before being changed to the one it has now?

Also, I checked my ERC in the pot it's in and I think it may have rotted. SOB...

I saw a reference to this hosta formerly being sold as Emerald Island. Karen, sorry to hear yours didn't make it :(
