Couldn't tell you about azaeleas since I don't know if they respond the way roses do, but about the roses, they are just suffering from a little transplant shock. Just pluck off and destroy the yellow leaves and wait for about a month or so to see what the roses do. By the way, I wasn't clear if you meant the roses are NOW planted in containers or in the ground. Either way, they need good drainage (and plenty of sun) or they will get yellow leaves that fall off. If your drainage is good, then it may be that you are watering them too much--or if they are in containers, that they are setting on trays that retain the water, which is too much for the plants. Other things can cause yellowing leaves also--like under-watering! But if you are like most new rose owners, you are more likely over-doing the care and watering too much as a result. But you will have to determine whether your soil is moist or very dry. I still think it is mostly transplant shock. Let us know how it's going in about a month--OK? Kate

I tested it this morning and it is right on 6.5, so it's great for the tomatoes, but high for the cucumbers. It's odd because just plain water out of the hose is very high - 8.5+. I guess the nutrient solution must have pulled it down. I'll see if I can add a little acid and drop that number down to around 6 and see if that makes a difference. Actually, the Ph kit is sort of fun, so my 8-year old and I have been running around testing the Ph of everything we can find, from Sprite to lemon juice. I now know the Ph of just about every liquid in my house. I figure with as bad as the science programs are in the public schools that it can't hurt to encourage some of that sort of thing at home so we're treating the hydroponic garden as one great big science project.

Hi, I am doing SFG also, and have a similar problem. I think I have the same trellis as you - actually not, I have the same width but it is a two sided trellis. I put mine diagonally across a 4x4 bed and put two plants on each side. Because in the past two years I have lost my cucumbers and zucchini to pests, I decided to companion plant nasturtiums with both my cucumbers and zucchini. So, no pests this year, but everything is going gangbusters including the nasturtiums. In fact the nasturtiums are taking over the trellis ladder. In my case I cut back some of the flower vines. Since everything looks healthy, I am going to assume that this is success. Your cucumber plants look nice and healthy too But next year, I'm going to plant the nasturtiums in a pot outside the box with its own obelisk.

Oh, man! Late frosts will do that to you. If you hear late frost warnings from the weather service, take action and water deeply the night before. Gee, I feel weird saying that though, Kelsey. We have been hitting the low 90s for highs lately! From someone who spent the day pulling weeds, sweating, inhaling pollen and is now sneezing -Kerchoo!- big time, enjoy those cool evening temperatures and send unused cold temps this way! ;o)) Ha! The plant will now decide which leaves to brown out completely and where to develop new foliage. It may take 2-4 weeks or so though. Just maintain the soil as evenly moist as you can. When the flower buds open (they look like small broccoli heads), if you see brown areas, that means that those parts got zapped by the frost too.
