Dig your own Plant Sale in Washington

For anyone in the Washington area...

I found this on the KCII Radio Classifieds (local Washington radio station) and thought I'd share with you all.

I haven't been able to get ahold of her yet, but will try again and let you know what she has available when I speak to her.

"FOR SALE -Dig your own plant sale. Clearing out a large perennial space with grasses and assorted perennials. Prices will depend on size of clump wanted, bring your own shovel, boxes or buckets. 319-653-4920 Janet"

I included her name and number only because it was already posted on the internet where I found it. Hope she doesn't mind. Maybe we can help her get that area cleared out! I sure will try to do my part!... ;0)

Please post what you find out. I'm interested and would drive up to Washington on this Friday afternoon or Sunday afternoon. The weather should be better by then I hope. Ruth

Hi Ruth,

Last night, I spoke to the woman having the sale. She seemed super nice, and told me a few of the plants she had. They were coming from a full sun garden, so no hostas, but she had a lot of tall, medium, and short ornamental grasses and a lot of different kinds of flowers (I wrote some of them down, but left the list at home today...will post it later tonight)

She had a varied work schedule, so I would suggest calling her personally to ask her when would be a good time to come down.

I do love this rain, but I hope it lets up by the weekend too!

Thank you both for your input. I didn't mention it in the Subject line, but this is #10 (at the moment anyway) of the proposed new FAQ under Daffs. Since there are so many little variations, and really no one 'right' way, I'm thinking of posting all of the above ways, with a little editing. Of course will run it by you all before inputting them. vetivert, (I'm going to start abbreviating that to just v v, OK?) I put them into big buckets and leave them under cover to dry off naturally. A few weeks later I clean off the dirt and the remains of the leaves and roots. I have always been told that putting daffs in plastic, for any amount of time at all, is a very bad thing. Would you mind if I would edit what you posted to substitute 'container' instead of "big buckets"? Donna, I don't remember helping you before digging time, but am glad you had digging and storing success. Just as a note, I had several kinds of jonquils that had formed softball sized clumps of very small bulbs. I have since read that when bulbs are planted too shallowly, they will "blast" into small sizes, but make dozens. I planted them a bit more deeply this week. hmmm...had never heard that. I planted maybe 5 bulbs of Sun Disc in 2006 quite shallowly and dug them this year. I don't recall them being softball sized clumps, but maybe it is because they are by nature a pretty small bulb anyway, since it is a miniature. I had 'lots' of blooms from the clump in the spring so I don't think there were any adverse problems being planted shallowly. I don't remember how much they had multiplied...think I will start noting that info when I dig. Maybe it is because of different climates and different soils, or maybe it depends upon the cultivar? Here is a tip too for those who have a lot of different daffs to dig. In the spring, when the daffs are in bloom, one can mark clumps needing dug by circling the foliage at ground level with some bright surveyor's tape with info written on it...bulb name if known, div/color, if that's all that is known, # of blooms, etc. The tape is available at any hardware or big box store and you can then just write the info on one end with a black sharpie. The writing will hold up for even more than one year, in case they get missed being dug the first year they are marked for digging. TOTALLY OFF TOPIC: Sue, has anyone done any work on daylight length and night temperatures? A link would be so welcome. N canaliculatus and henriquesii are the species under consideration. v v, Now that is a totally new wrinkle with me (something I have not heard of before).

Hi Mindy and all on the New England Forum, Michelle runs a wonderful plant sale in Avon as part of the Cosco's work for the Children's Miracle Network and Children's Hospital in Boston. Any amount of money made for them is well appreciated and her huge donation is a tribute to her and her family and hard work she puts into this. Any and all help will be appreciated, whether it be seeds mailed to her to start, containers to sow seeds in, Spring divisions of perennials that you could donate, even if they need to be grown for the following years plant sale, seedlings that you started from seed or reseeds in your gardens and any and all extra pots that you no longer want. And of course, anyone that is able to volunteer some time in Avon at the plant sale would be well appreciated. Michelle can arrange for someone to come to your home to pick up anything that you are able to donate for the plant sale, so if you are not able to bring it down, don't feel that you can't help out. Marlene, so you had to be "dragged out of the Prouty Garden" and in Oct no less. You should see it in the spring and summer then. It's become one beautiful garden with plants growing, blooming for every season. I can remember when it was just a dream to have and how it slowly took shape and started to develop. Many, many perennials, trees and plants there are from my grandparent's farm, donated by them over the early years of the development of the garden, and spent many a day shoveling soil, compost, peat, mulch and planting that garden, It's a beautiful, peaceful place to sit and relax in, enjoy the beauty and bring a child to that is an inpatient. It is always full of staff, parents, children and in the summer, many an event is held outside in the garden for the children. Michelle, I suggest that instead of using the abbreviation CMN, you actually use the full name, Children's Miracle Network and Children's Hospital. To dig or not to dig - native plant rescue

LantanaTX, I think you should go ahead and rescue the plants you want. There is almost no chance that they will be valued or saved by the owner of the lot. I appreciate the fact that some members of this forum have had plants stolen from their future building lots, but keep in mind that there are very very few people who would notice or care - one in a million might be too high an estimate of our numbers. If land will be developed by a land developer or will become commercial property then most likely the entire lot will be cleared, and you can feel safe rescuing any plant you find. If the lots will be developed individually or by a developer who is saving some of the woods (if there are woods there now) then you might think twice about taking ALL of the plants near the edges of the lot (I'd still take some). Most people build their home somewhere near the center of the lot, and if they save woodlands will save some near the edges, near the back, or on steep hills or near a creek, for example. With a little imagination you can probably guess where the house will go, and take any plants that will be under or within 50 feet of the house. It is a rare property owner indeed who will rescue wildflowers from beneath the building site. If you think the plants might be spared by the developer (on a steep hill, for example) then take only some and leave some behind, but don't be surprised to find that even steep hill will be cleared and sodded. Keep in mind that for most species of plants you won't need to take all of the plant. Many wildflowers spread vegetatively to form clumps, or tend to appear from seed in clumps. Taking a few individuals or dividing a clump will allow you to take some and leave some behind. Other species can be started from seed. In many cases I find it is easier to transplant a small start from a large clump of wildflowers rather than try to move the whole clump. Other plants are best from seed. Indian Grass, for example could be divided, leaving most of the plants where they are, or you could collect seed. My bottom line is that it is very unlikely that any of the plants will survive the development of the property unless you remove them. If I could find some time to rescue some plants, then I would go ahead and do it and, rather than feel guilty about trespassing, I'd feel good for having saved something that would have been destroyed. Unlike April, I guess I am not the "ask permission" type. I wouldn't worry too much about finding endangered plants, since they are by definition quite rare, but keep in mind they do carry special legal protection.

Dig your own water well?

Thanks digit and Skybird! When we bought the house, I did check about the legalities, that's where I got that I can irrigate however many thousand square feet it is. I know just enough about water rights in the west to never assume we've got a right to any, lol. The pump would need to be replaced I'm sure, as it's an industrial sized beast. Our neighborhood has 108 homes, and from what I understand, it supplied them all. The seller's realtor, being thorough, uncovered that the well had not been decommissioned (which we pretty much guessed since there's still a pump sitting on it). She contacted the city (we live in the county but use city water now) and they said it either had to be decommissioned or there had to be a backflow preventer installed in case we ever tried to hook the house to the well. Since the backflow was cheaper (upfront at least- we have to pay for inspections) that was the seller's preference, and having the option of using the well was something we wanted to hold on to, so that's where we still are. Part of me would like to put a pump with a hand-pump option, just in case there was some reason for a major outage (we do live in earthquake and volcano country, though we should not be in a volcano path, Who knows what could happen). Either way, it's not that high on the priority list right now, but I was curious about berries' experience. I'll pop back in to say hi again one day. :-)

Okay, I admit I'm a skeptic...but, I just want to know if I understand the nature of this offer.

The seller wants me to drive to her home after I call and book the date. Bring my own tools and containers. Then labor to unearth her plants. Pack them in my containers. Then pay her money for the plants. And, the pricing of the plants has not been determined in advance. What if she wants $20 a clump after the digging is done?

If the seller has some really rare specimens this might be worth it. But, why pray tell, would I pay good money for potentially diseased second hand ordinary plants that I could buy fresh from the greenhouse with out all the work?

Now if the plants were free...I'd understand the deal.

There's a definite lack of "quid pro quo" here. Remember what PT Barnum said was "born every minute".

I was surprised by your very negative response to my post. I think it was a little harsh...

I am still in the "beginning" stages of my garden (and this forum), with much room to grow (pun intended :) SO I was excited by the prospect of a variety of local, well-established plants for, it turns out, a reasonable price, from a nice person in my own small town.

I thought, being such an open and welcoming forum, I would share with you all.

If you think this is some sort of scam, or an otherwise negative thing, do not participate. Simple.

Remember, it was my mother who said..."if you can't say anything nice..."

I know someone who wanted to do away with her perennial garden. She offered them to the local community plant sale with the proviso that we dig and provide the pots and tools and fill the holes. We did, but would never do THAT again!...and the plants were free!
I have a scam of my own...it goes like this.
"Want some free Golden tiara hosta?"
"Yes! Sure!!"
Me again "Then please bring a pot and some top soil to fill the hole and you can have 1/2 of several clumps of mine."
So far it's worked every time....but perhaps one day they will catch on that I just am looking for free labor!
I say...it's a good thing if you can get people to fall for it, but I would never pay for plants on that basis.
