Lady In Red Hydrangea

Does anyone have experience with this variety of hydrangea? - Lady In Red? I planted this last year, it survived our winter however it did die back considerably. It's healthy and growing rather fast now, however I think this hydrangea blooms on old wood? Guess I may not have blooms this year since it died back so far. Just wondering if anyone else has feedback.

LIR is a typical Lace Cap macrophylla, with distinctive burgundy stens and colorful fall foliage. When grown in locations with some prolonged sun exposure, the foliage will exhibit some burgundy coloration throughout the spring & summer.
It is not a remontant type and blooms only on old wood, normally. However, many macrophyllas and serratas will occasionally produce a few scattered blooms on new wood in late summer or fall.
In your Zone, you will need to provide some winter protection for the plant to produce a flush of blooms on old wood, in the spring/summer.

I got one of the very first LIRs back when they were just selling cuttings of it at the Atlanta Flower Show before it was introduced. I've been real hot and cold on it. I don't think it ever really lived up to all the hype that was built up around it. Now that I've had it for a few years now though, it's actually growing on me a bit more. It is a nice plant, a good strong grower, blooms very reliably. has nice big flowers (deep blue here in GA). I have found over the years as I've done branch propagation and now have more, that the color and performance is VERY dependent on sighting and exposure. The best performing one I have is on the sidewalk off my side yard. It gets a northern exposure on a fence with no real direct sun, but high shade in a overall very bright area.

I'm 'thinking' I got my Lady in Red at WM when it was gotten in for a special offer and it was just $10. I usually won't pay much more than that regardless of what it is, because I know eventually I will find what I like at a lower price, though the plant may be smaller. I can just as easily loose/kill a larger plant the same as a smaller one. Your email link still does not appear on your member page. All that appears to be changed is the garden zone is there. Also, since there is no place to put your state abbreviation, it can just go in the same box as the garden zone, and it will show up in your posts....as I am in S IN (Indiana). While you are there (again) I 'think' what you have under "Seeds to Trade" (or at least part of it) should be under "Plants to trade"...The same with "Seeds I am looking For" The hydrangeas, and rose you have listed under seeds, are they maybe cuttings? rooted cuttings? suckers? or layered starts? It helps to describe what you have to trade as best as you can. Even if they are just cuttings, you may likely find another trader who would trade cuttings for cuttings. Sue...resident busybody.

I had thought it was a rebloomer, but your mention and something I saw in print is making me doubt my memory. Mine came back fabulously, and Houston is not prime hydrangea territory. I have it in a large container on the edge of my shade porch on the sheltered side of my house. It's kind of funny, it just hit me when I started to comment that all the blooms are on one side of the bush, that it is the sunny side. Probably not coincidental, huh? Anyway, I like it a lot, and maybe I'll post some pics when the flowers open fully.

I was afraid of that. Not sure why I didn't believe the zone9 part of the ad, but it looks more like something that would do well in Georgia with the huge azaleas. How about other hydrangeas? I'm pining for the large round shrub with the giant white flower heads I remember from childhood.

LIR is a Lacecap. For a donation, I received some from the UGA Research Center prior to general introduction. Other than having burgundy (red) stems and some leaf veins, I am unimpressed with them. Mine are grown in an area that receives several hours of morning sun and have been very slow growing, only about 3' tall after 3 years and with a very open growth habit. They have some coloration of leaves in the fall, but not outstanding. They are generally higher priced at local nurseries here, being a new cultivar and patented, which requires a licensing agreement and a per plant royalty payment by the growers. They also have to purchase those red pots to market them in! The price you paid is a bargain. I haven't seen those marked down that low here. Rb

One virtue I can cite is that it holds up to our heat here in Houston. I have one in a pot on the edge of a shade porch and it has made it through two winters and is on its second summer. It blooms reliably and the contrast of the dark foliage is very nice against the pink blooms. I will say, though that it does not exhibit the red color that the blooms are claimed to attain later in the season. It could be our climate, though. I do like mine, and it weathered my overwatering goof rather well.

I have one and am fairly underwhelmed. It seems to primarily be a foliage plant, and we have plenty of options in the South for nice foliage among broadleaf evergreens.
