How/When to harvest Impatiens seeds

I know there is a little green pod that needs to mature, but need to know when is the best time for zone 5a 5b ...says 6 for me but I think metro Detroit is zone 5a or 5b. Anyway, does the green pod turn brown?

Hi. The green pod will not turn brown. It vill explode when it is mature.

Impatiens is a very easy plant to collect seeds from.

This is my way of harvesting the seeds.

From what you can see of seed image for Penstemon digitalis (of which Mystica is one) in linked image I'd say they need to age more on stems until they're tannish brown at least. Link belove shows seed image for species Penstemon digitalis. Checked my Husker's Red and single seeds inside pods are still green also. If anyone has experience with Mystica and my assumption is incorrect that all the 'digitalis' Penstemon group have similar seeds I'm sure they'll advise you. My Mystica are just finishing their first year so no flowers this year. Would think all Penstemon digitalis are the same as far as seed formation goes. KHT & Karyn: Thanks for the replies. That stocking suggestion is a good tip and I will try doing it. The yellows still are not podding, but the blooms are soo pretty. Some are VERY yellow, but some are pale almost a whitish yellow ... all on the same plant. FOXD: Answered your ~mail. As you can see from the above comment, some white might be present, but these are yellowish white. But happy to share. Will let you all know if and when the yellows set seed. Love these Daturas. Bugs don't touch them and the heat doesn't seem to affect them. Cast-iron plants??? ;0)Gloria

Thanks, Penny. Is it too late to collect the seed heads from Jacob Cline Mondarda? That did well for me, as well as the Cleome you sent me. The Cleome was just spectacular!! I'm sorry to tell you the Lobelia Cardinalis did not do well. It was just too hot and dry, even though I watered it almost every day. Then some kind of bug chewed it up. The only other things that have bloomed well for me are the pentas, Salvia B & B, and the Agastache Apricot Sprite. The Apricot Sprite seed packets were everywhere this spring. Do you think they are as easy to find in other parts of the country? I could try and collect seeds for exchange if you think others couldn't find them in the stores. Salvia B & B doesn't come back true from seeds, so it doesn't seem right to collect these seeds for trade. What about pentas? How do you collect those seeds? I have been cutting off the spent flower heads all summer long to keep it blooming. Thanks!!

Thanks for the pictures. I have seen these little curly things and had no idea what the heck they were LOL... So they do not reseed themselves? I live in zone 4. I know this post started some time ago but I hope someone is looking and can give an answer. It is Oct. here and I saved about 40, 48 cell packs from a local store that threw them out as they were all dried up and not saleable. I took then from the sales person who gave permission, watered them and thought if anything I could reuse the containers. To my suprise I have hundreds of plants and I want to take them all inside this winder into a all weather room. Do you think they will make it? They are lovely and I hate to see these little guys die. Thanks Nancy.

One more question. Does that green seed pod happen AFTER the flower dies off and is left with a seed pod? I didn't see one; I read there was one. Thanks again,

The pods will form after the flowers are successfully pollinated. Some hybrids (most of our impatiens are hybrids) will produce very few seed pods, though, and those seeds rarely result in a duplicate of the mother plant. The cultivars that do produce pods create a BUNCH of them!

I JUST GATHERED MY FIRST IMPATIENS SEED POD IT HAD TO BROWNISH YELLOW SO i THINK I ALMOST DIDN'T GET IT IN TIME I HAVE A GLASS PILL BOX CONTAINER AND SET IT IN THERE I TRIED MOVING IT AWAY FROM A GREEN POD AND IT JUST EXPLODED BUT SINCE I HAD IT IN THE CONTAINER I WAS ABLE TO SAVE ALL OF THE SEEDS. NOW FOR THE NEXT STEP SORRY I DIDN'T REALIZE THE CAP BUTTON WAS PUSHED UNTIL THE END OF THIS.
