When to Harvest Dat Seed Pods

Happy to report that my first attempt at growing Daturas seems to be "growing" well. Thanks again to those of you who so generously sent me seeds. I have some forming pods and would like to collect the seed to plant in other parts of the garden (so I don't want all of them to self-seed). How do I know when to pick a pod? Do I wait until it dries and falls or will that be too late? I have really gotten to luv these plants and they seem to like my "awful" hot, dry area!!! I have some pods forming on the white as well as on the double purple. None yet on the double yellow.

BTW Kylie if you read this, I would be happy to send some seed your way to help replace what the Moos-Moos trampled!!! Thanks everyone. Gloria

Gloria, you want to wait until they brown and start to crack open then they are ready. Or put a nylon loosely around it to catch the seeds. Just yell if you need more directions.

Gloria the pods won't drop, they just split. The pods on my double Metel varieties don't really dry but the shell becomes kind of friable and crumbles away. Those seeds don't shoot out all over like the ones from the spikey podded varieties do.

I didn't breed my thai this year. It was seed grown over winter and wanted more size before I set it back breeding it. I will have more seed next year your welcome to some then if you like.. there was no real point in pollinating the diamond head but I had no other flowers open at the time so I just went for it for somthing to do. I threw a few in some compost the other day. If I give them bottom heat they should spring up in a week or so

I start some of the doubles inside early but they have such erratic germination rates. I have seeds from the same pods sprouting at 2 weeks and others 4 months later. I do think they germinate better when started outside but some bloom so late in the season if they aren't started early. I end up sowing them from Feb through May. Some varieties will self seed. The T & M catalog says you can dig and store the tubers. Have you tried that? How tall were they for you? T & M says they are taller than a couple of other dahlias with burgundy or bronze foliage, Redskin, and one Park's carries, but I thought I remembered them being short. I want to grow some dahlias with dark foliage next spring.

regular ... CHEAP florescent shop lamps are good enough ... how many and how close is the issue ... key word: light intensity ... 2 words.. lol ... plants started now .. [too early!] .... will not go dormant until next fall ... you need a 2 or 4 light fixture.. fully adjustable from about 6 inches to 3 feet ... lights will be on a timer .. 16 hours on.. 8 off ... one on/off cycle if your timer allows ... did you find the link .. oh crikey.. i will do it for you ... but i have to tell you.. if i have to write a tome for you .. i will probably lose interest ... i enjoy answering specific questions ... etc .. see link .. ken Here is a link that might be useful: yep.. right there.. just right of dead center on the library home page .... your choice on location ..... read up.. narrow down your questions.. please .... and trust me.. your first 'get up' need not be anything as complicated as those shown here ....

Gloria, could I have/trade for some of the Yellow Double Datura? The ones I ordered and planted are now blooming and turn out to be white double blooms. *grumble*

KHT & Karyn: Thanks for the replies. That stocking suggestion is a good tip and I will try doing it. The yellows still are not podding, but the blooms are soo pretty. Some are VERY yellow, but some are pale almost a whitish yellow ... all on the same plant.
FOXD: Answered your ~mail. As you can see from the above comment, some white might be present, but these are yellowish white. But happy to share.
Will let you all know if and when the yellows set seed. Love these Daturas. Bugs don't touch them and the heat doesn't seem to affect them. Cast-iron plants??? ;0)Gloria

Gloria if you get any pods on your bright yellow dats can you set a few seeds aside for me if I need them? Mine are just coming into bloom and the yellows don't always give me pods. The others always form pods on pretty much every spent bloom but the yellows are another matter. Thankfully some people that I'd given seeds to previously returned the favor or I wouldn't have had any yellows this season.
