A Question To Drive You Crazy!!

Okay! I know, I know! when people ask these questions people roll their eyes and say a few choice words!! But I am going to do it anyway:) Here it is (drumroll please!) If you could plant only one clematis which one would it be and why?

I have a fence that probably should be torn out but me being me I am going to plant!! I think that a mass planting would be cool. So let me have it

Wow, that's a really hard question. There are so many wonderful clematis available. I guess it would depend on where the fence was, what was planted near it, and what kind of sun it got. I have Dutches of Edinburgh (sp) on a spit rail fence in partial shade. The Dutches really sparks things up there. I have General Sikorski enter twined with a pink shrub rose and it seems to be happy. I have Polish Spirit climbing on a trellis next to the garage/garden shed, and it's doing well. I guess you just have to figure out what color, type, and size suit your spot the best. :) Not much help, am I? :)

Sorry, Tam. I think your question is indicative of one of the common mindsets that actually do drive most of us crazy. We have been led to believe that if only we will buy this or that particular plant, our gardens will be beautiful. Sadly, we find that instead of the hoped for satisfaction, something is still missing.

A much better question is how to best stage, compliment and display the assets of (in this case) clematis. As with life in general, it is not so important what you have as it is what you do with what you have. A plain old Jackmanii clematis that is well-displayed can far surpass the landscaping impact made by more expensive ones that are planted nilly-willy.

Now you can go crazy asking yourself how you can improve the way you display your plants. ;-)

Container soils often have wide and rapid fluctuations in temperature and moisture levels, which, in general, means that they're far from ideal habitats for the microorganisms that break down organic fertilizers/amendments into plant available nutrients. These fluctuations will be less pronounced in a container with a larger soil volume, so my guess is that Josh has drawn the line at 15 gallons for his own growing conditions. That's not to say that fish emulsion will never be effective in a 10 gallon pot or that it will always be effective in a 15 gallon pot . Rather, it's an indication that, by their very nature, organic fertilizers provide less reliable results in container culture. With than in mind, each of us has to experiment in order to determine what does and doesn't work in our own unique circumstances.

AnnKH, SueB, I do sometimes choose form over function. I'm often willing to live with a little inconvenience in exchange for things I find pleasing to look at. When it comes to a bathroom, the most logical thing is double sinks in a vanity with storage underneath, and a mirror clear across. I don't have that anywhere and I won't be putting it in, since I like period looks and it just feels wrong to me. So, for example, my daughters' bath at home is a jack and jill. They each have a pedestal sink, and in between their sinks is this (though theirs is all painted) a> In the summer house, I am doing something a bit similar with a furniture piece. The footprint is actually pretty generous for their bath (NOTE - drawings are not precise, and yes, it is all to code). They are still in middle school and so no makeup or hairdryers yet, but soon I am sure. Shh, don't tell Dad. Their storage area will include: 1. Where you see the royal blue rectangle is a furniture piece (there was supposed to be a wall there , but we had them make a space to put the piece under the eave). I thought I had a photo but I don't; it is sort of a Shabby Chic piece 2. There is a closet to the right of the sink that will have some storage in it, including perhaps over-the-door 3. Inset medicine cabinet over the toilet. 4. Shelves on the interior knee wall next to the toilet 5, "Secret compartment" inset near the baseboard level next to the toilet (I have this in my MBA at home and wanted to repeat it) 6. worst case, I could skirt the sink and put storage underneath

I have a set of switches in my bathroom. I chose to have only one with backlighting so that I could see exactly which one to turn on if I enter the room after dark. The others control other lights in the bathroom, but not ones I would need for a middle of the night visit.

Markar: Sorry, I don't think I can post pictures anytime very soon--I've never done it and don't have time to learn right now, though I have read the instructions on this site. I have pictures on my camera but as yet they are not on my computer or a photo sharing site. I will post some eventually but not sure when. I have lurked for over a year but never posted til now so I'm a novice at this. Basically, I did away with the corner cabinet and cabinets on the sides of the range that used to be part of an L-shaped kitchen. I find corner cabinets awkward and/or a waste of space, and then there were the reasons above for not putting cabinets on the sides of the stove. So now my sink wall, one leg of the L, is the only run of countertop I have, with open shelving above and below. The stove wall, the other leg of the L, has the range in the middle, a tall narrow freestanding metal cabinet to the right which still allows access to the end of the sink wall shelving, and some narrow soapstone shelves sitting on brackets attached to the wall to the left of the stove but with a few inches of space between them and the stove. Perhaps that description is as clear as mud...I will post pictures when I can get around to it. Hope I'm not hijacking this thread too badly.

non vining Clematis scottii planted at the posts of the fence, too many folks have things climbing along the rails thus hiding the natural weathered wood.

My vote goes to sweet autumn clematis, my favorite, hands down. If your fence really needs covering, cover it. But the structure will have to be strong enough to hold this one, so if it's not just the looks you're covering up, better to go with something else.

Tangutica/sp? (small yellow bell flowers) and viorma (native leather flower). Both look particularly good in rustic settings and are my particular favorites. I'm also partial to sweet autumn. Guess I'm drawn to the smaller flowered varieties.

sweet autumn, it also has a lovely fragrance in the fall. Color all season - no problem - if your fence is long enough why not different ones. You have a good idea with the mass. You can also incorporate a perennial sweetpea, blooms all yr too.

I vote for the plain old Jackmanii that Ironbelly mentioned ... because I like purple :)
