Torenia is a very nice trailing annual that does well in shade. I especially like the Proven Winners Blue violet one. I agree with the lobelia and the sweet potato vines too. They're both nice spillers. For something altogether different, look for strawberry begonia. It is technically a ground cover, but it will trail very nicely, and it's perenniel. Another one is archangel. It's great in pots, but don't put it in the ground. It's pretty invasive.

I haven't tried any in water. If it makes root within 2 weeks in fast-draining soil, I don't see any reason to bother with the water on this one. I don't own any hormones although that probably wouldn't hurt if you want to use it. Mine are in a lot of sun so the plastic bag would cook them. For most house plants, I make a mix of mostly mulch with composted leaves, a bit of bagged top soil or yard dirt if I don't have a bag. I just went outside to pull one of the newest cuttings so we could all see what it's doing under the soil. When I said yesterday it was firmly rooted, I had no idea it had made this much (many?) roots. Here's a play-by-play of pulling it out. I'm going to pull the one on the left: A LOT of soil is coming up with it: This surprised me Roots are holding onto a lot of soil I shook off a lot of the soil. There's roots along the whole 3 inches that was buried. Back in the pot Hope your efforts are as successful!

You can pot up to a bigger container or cut back the tops hard and remove about half the root mass from bottom & sides & return to the same container with fresh soil. I think if I was in your area I'd think seriously about adding a water holding polymer to the soil as well. If soil is drying that quickly, you should be able to fasten a reservoir saucer to the bottom of your container ............. never mind - I just realized you said baskets. I guess you could buy containers & ditch the baskets. You just have way too much evaporative surface in baskets for your growing area. ...great for growing roots, though. Al

I use those coir-lined baskets a lot, and you're right--they drain VERY well and it's more of a problem keeping them moist (I have them outside and it's hot here.) I like them very much--no need to worry about over-watering even when we have one of our periodic downpours with several inches of rain. I think it's important to think about the kind of hanging basket--or pot--you're using when you pot a small plant into a larger pot. If it's plastic, I wouldn't go too much larger unless it's a fast-growing plant. If it's unglazed terra cotta, you can go to a bigger pot, and in a coir-lined basket still bigger. And of course the mix matters, and whether you're going to put it outside in the wind or inside in a naturally-cool house, like in the beautiful PNW, or----- There's always more than one thing to consider! And for what to plant in it--good suggestions so far, but I think pothos tends to prefer going up a moss pole, or a tree like I'm lucky enough to have right now--the leaves are already starting to get quite large. By August they should be huge, and they only do that when they grow up instead of hanging. Have you thought about begonias or maybe gesneriads? I have a columnea and a eucodonia in coir-lined baskets and they are sending out shoots through the coir as well as upright. Pretty neat!
