I like the pothos. I also like the plant called burro's tail. But I'm a sucker for succulents.:)

Pothos is good, so is wandering jew, purple and vining. Of course the white varigated ivies are nice as well. If you like the pothos, go for it! Just get the white varigated marble queen type (yes I like white varigation :) Thats my two cents.

The reason why one shouldn't overpot, or put a plant in a pot that's too large for it, is that:

1) All the extra wet soil around the root ball reduces the amount of oxygen that's able to get through to the roots, and
2) Holding wet soil for too long on a plant that doesn't like to be too wet will cause the plant to rot. Or at least it will encourage rot.

Pothos could work, but in my experience it's sensitive enough to being too wet that you should definitely do the three six-inch plants instead of the one.

It doesn't sound to me like you have quite enough light for burro's tail (Sedum morganianum), though I might be wrong. English or Algerian ivy (Hedera helix and H. canariensis) would likely work, as would a lot of other things.

Hmm... Burro's tail is pretty, but I think one of those would have to go outside. The wandering jew is really nice, I will definitely give that one some thought (provided I can find it). I've been keeping Google Images busy, if you can't tell. :-)

Would the pothos do better if I got three of them, and repotted them with Tapla's fast-draining soil mix? Is that safe? The idea of removing all of the dirt from the roots of a plant and replacing it just feels so wrong! But the two pothos I have already have plenty of roots.

BTW, the baskets don't have plastic or anything in them, so they should drain out pretty quickly.

I use those coir-lined baskets a lot, and you're right--they drain VERY well and it's more of a problem keeping them moist (I have them outside and it's hot here.) I like them very much--no need to worry about over-watering even when we have one of our periodic downpours with several inches of rain. I think it's important to think about the kind of hanging basket--or pot--you're using when you pot a small plant into a larger pot. If it's plastic, I wouldn't go too much larger unless it's a fast-growing plant. If it's unglazed terra cotta, you can go to a bigger pot, and in a coir-lined basket still bigger. And of course the mix matters, and whether you're going to put it outside in the wind or inside in a naturally-cool house, like in the beautiful PNW, or----- There's always more than one thing to consider! And for what to plant in it--good suggestions so far, but I think pothos tends to prefer going up a moss pole, or a tree like I'm lucky enough to have right now--the leaves are already starting to get quite large. By August they should be huge, and they only do that when they grow up instead of hanging. Have you thought about begonias or maybe gesneriads? I have a columnea and a eucodonia in coir-lined baskets and they are sending out shoots through the coir as well as upright. Pretty neat!

I was actually thinking of hanging one on each end of the couch, and running twine between them, so they could meet in the middle. I don't know how well that would work in the real world, it's just the original idea that prompted the purchase of the pothos and the baskets.

Columnea is gorgeous! I've never seen that before. The begonias and gesneriads are pretty too, but I think a lot of the blooms would be wasted, as they'd be to far up to see. Eucodonia is pretty, but the few pictures I've found look a bit thin to work in a 12" basket.

I'm starting to think this thread was a REALLY bad idea. I'll probably end up with pothos in the original baskets, and then getting more baskets for some wandering jew (bedroom), columnea (kitchen), and burro's tail (out back). I think Grocery Outlet had some plain baskets for $3.99... If you'll excuse me now... :-)

How about portulaca? I like it because you get new blooms everyday of all colours and it is reasonably drought tolerant. May need higher light though.

I also like Strawflower...it is really stunning in a hanging pot or in the ground

You could just trail potato vines from all sides.

Asparagus fern is interesting too and can be brought inside until the following year.

I saw someone with creeping jenny trailing over the edges of hanging pots. I am trying that one this year as well.
