Parts of leaves turning light brown and dry

I am still having problems with these new plants. I seem to have conqured the wilting problem but now parts of the leaves are turning light brown and are totally dry in those areas. I have sprayed them once with a pesticide and a floral liquid fertilizer mixed according to directions. Would the spray cause the problem? I have checked for moisture and they seem fine. I posted a picture in the gallery titled: Forever & Ever Red Hydrangea

Your picture is quite small.

But the detail that I can see tells me it's a normal reaction to an excessively dry rootball.

If you think something else is going on, could you post a larger picture, please?

I posted a larger picture. It is not a lot bigger but I hope that you can see it a little better. I am new to posting pictures but I will conuer that. I am going to water the plants today. The flowers seem okay. It is just the leaves that are drying. Thanks, so much, for your help!

Just a guess without seeing at least a picture as it could be anything from root rot caused by too much water to pests (aphids) on those 2 plants, nitrogen burn from over fertilization, to early stages of one of the foliage diseases. Most likely - too much water in that particular place in the bed. Is it low-lying where water might collect or a poorly draining pocket? Next best would be environmental damage if they are where heavy winds could have affected them more than the others. Next best would be aphids. Next best guess would be maybe Early Blight but its symptoms are very classic - see pictures on the web of it. But with just your description of leaves are brown, dry and the plant looks almost dead it is impossible to do anything but guess. They appear to have suffered a freeze to me. It isn't surprising your tree rose foliage isn't affected. Cold air sinks, pooling at the lowest levels. The coldest air could have been below the head of the standard where the lower foliage would have suffered the cold damage. It could also be the genetic difference in cold hardiness of the foliage between the variety shown and that budded to the tree, or both. The leaves are softer, thinner and more susceptible to freeze damage at higher temps than the canes. Kim

Make sure it's getting enough light and that the air is humid. If there's not enough humidity, you can try to spray some warm water in the air around the plant daily :)

They are probably going through a little shock because of the change of light. Continue what you normally do and they will bounce back. Place them back into filtered light for a few days and then back into the same area as you normally have them. They need to reacclimate again. Those leaves will fall off, but it's ok. My trees are having the normal yellowing of leaves due to the change in temps.. so I wouldn't worry.. make sure you water and let them dry out as you normally would. ( wet/ dry) cycle. Umm, I don't see anything new/different.

Right now, your goal should be to help the plant develop roots. So, I suggest you remove the flower heads -- they use up water the leaves should have.

And when you water, make certain it goes *into* the rootball, not just in the general area.

If your soil is very dry, water may tend to "run off" if you use a strong stream of water. Try a slow drip instead.
