Recommended grouping strategy? Hummingbird 'islands'?

I've read several web sites and books about creating a hummingbird garden. They all say that hummingbirds are fiercly territorial, and that one should create "islands" of hummer flowers so that you can have one hummer claiming each island.

I haven't really found any more specific information on this, so I'd love to hear your experiences with creating hummer islands. I've got a medium-sized planting area in front where I could have two or three groups of flowers, but two of them will be within 15 feet of each other, and the third will just be 20 feet away. Is that close enough that one hummer will claim it all? Should I just fill all the space with as many various hummer flowers as I can and hope for the best, or should I try to space out the groupings as much as possible?
