I'm not an expert (as many on this forum are) but the pictured hosta resembles a very young/immature H. 'Dream Weaver' which is a favorite of mine. I have several DW growing in my garden. The leaves are a bit too pointy for DW, and don't display the bluish cast of DW's leaves. Hopefully others will weigh in with more possible IDs.

It does appear to be a healthy plant.

Depending on how far north you are of Boston, you have a couple of good nurseries in that general area. If you are close to Mason, NH, go over to visit Mason Hollow Nurseries. They are great folks, and they know their hosta. Plus, you won't have to worry about the HVX (Hosta Virus X) which affects many of the hosta from places that do not have plants they offer for sale checked for disease. That includes the box stores.

If DH has a desire to gift you with hosta, that is wonderful. Why not find out the hours the Mason Hollow is open, and take a nice drive over one day this summer. You'll see things to knock your socks off, and bring them home big and fine without waiting and without fretting if they are healthy.

I hope it isn't DW, that's just huge for my tiny bed. Whirlwind looks really neat, with the growth habit, and seems to be a match. Now I'm checking out the other, oh so slightly larger bed in front of the house to see if I can make room there, LOL!

Mason NH is a bit of a hike - I'm about 10 miles N of Boston. But we have a couple of good nurseries not too far. If I don't have room out front, they are going back and I'll see if I can find smaller varieties.

When hosta are that young, sometimes it's hard to identify them. If it is Dream Weaver, it will take a long time for it to get big. It's a slow grower for most people.

How much space do you have? You might try going that route. Tell us how much space you have and what color hosta you want. That might get you where you want to go.

So Sweet is not going to stay under 24". Mine is in a pot, in the south and is 36" wide and about 15" tall. Mine is about 4 or 5 years old. It would be larger in the ground and up north.

I just bought a beautiful little hosta called Diamonds are forever. It will probably stay under 24".

*grin* that was the problem, I think. I forgot the title of my post. But thank you, I didn't realize I could search for the title. I was trying just single words. I don't have a phone with Internet access yet, so I don't generally worry about answers coming directly to me. Besides, if I did that, I'd miss some awesome information offered between what I'm looking for!!

The bed where I want to put them is about 1.5' wide, and 10' long. It's at the edge of a retaining wall, so I could go farther back away from the edge if I need to. 1.5 ft is just the width I've usually planted. I don't think DH would begrudge a little more of his lawn. It's getting a fair amount of sun right now, about 5 hours, but once the big maple leafs out, that will go to all but 2 hrs dappled. The 2 hours of straight sun is before 1 pm, so it's not as strong as later.

I went ahead and returned the unknowns to Home Depot this morning, because I'd just rather have something that I can point to and call by name. I did walk out to the garden area, just to see what they had this morning, and the other hostas like what I returned all have weird little spots on the leaves. Not browned, just kind of dimples with the bumps on the underside of the leaf. Pretty funny/odd looking. I was even more glad I didn't keep them.

While I was out did some scouting at a couple (two) nurseries close by. The bigger one had only a few, and all names that I know get pretty big. Elegans, um- - - Francee?, and one called Wide Brim. There were others, just nothing that said anything less than 36" wide. The smaller privately owned nursery has a huge display of Patriot. It's the color I like, with the white margins so it's bright in the shade. What about that one? I am trying to bracket a semi miniature rose with matching plants. I'll also research before I go back and buy them, but hearing from people who really know a plant variety is soo helpful!
