Pocatello, Idaho Falls Gardeners

Hi there, I wanted to start a new thread for gardeners from the Pocatello and Idaho Falls area to be able to post to. Idaho is such a large spread out state and so diverse in its zones and soils that I thought it might be easier to find more local help if there was a more localized thread to find info.

We moved here to the Pocatello area a year ago from western Wyoming. I am now in zone 5 from zone 4 so I am excited to be able to plant a lot more plants than I have been able to in the past.

I have started digging beds in three phases beginning with phase one which is a small bed adjacent to my deck. Each bed will get larger and larger as I am able to get to them with the last bed about 4 ft. by 73 ft. I am going to need lots of good soil and probably somewhere to put my sod so if anyone has any good ideas please let me know.

I hope to meet lots of you soon and hopefully this thread will be a great way to meet people in our area and a great way to be a help to others.

Welcome to Southeast Idaho!

I'm just north of you in Idaho Falls.

Our climate is a bit more harsh. Usually we are about 2 weeks behind you.

Today, I got the last of my warm weather vegetables in . . squash, cucumbers and I'm trying a melon, Minnesota Midget (small cantaloupes -- very early).

I'm harvest lettuce & greens I planted from transplants. The first radishes are close. Everything is up except the green beans I put in a week ago.

I'm kind of exited about my tomatoes this year. Usually I just grow Celebrity and Early Girl. This year I'm being a bit more adventurous --- added Black Krim (love the flavor) and Ida Gold (an early tomato from the University of Idaho).

My garden is a bit interesting. My home faces north. My backyard is pretty shady. I have a garden on the West side that does pretty well but it is limited in size (about 15 ft by 25 ft.). I also have a raised planter behind my garage (that where the tomatoes, cucumbers and melons are). And, I use pots on my covered patio (early greens, peppers, a few flowers, etc.).

Most of my sun is in the front. I mostly do flowers there. There year it is kind a cottage garden theme: butterfly flowers, snapdragons, zinnias, marygolds, lupins, lilies, etc.

I also do a shade bed under one of my big blue spruces -- usually begonias, impatiens, hostas, etc. Not in yet. Hopefully this week.

Hey Steve,
It was so wonderful to read about your gardens. They sound amazing! Hasn't this weather been interesting? I am glad to finally be in the 70's for a few days but it appears we are about to be back in the 60's again. Oh well... in a few weeks we will all be complaining how hot it is. :-)

I completely changed up my gardening plans. LOL A young man was supposed to come help us dig out our beds but he never showed up so after two weeks I just started digging them out myself. Boy oh boy!! My poor aching muscles. LOL I dug out the smallest and it looks really pretty. I put my perennials in it that I brought with me from my home in Wyoming. I am going to take my time deciding how to fill up the rest but for now I put all my baby petunia seedlings in that I grew from seed. (Petunias really germinate well!!! LOL)

I want to someday have a small vegetable garden plot in my back yard. I have probably an 8x8 area that gets full sun so I will put it there but for now I am going to work on my flower beds but oh boy from reading your thread my mouth is sure watering!

I did put in two tomato plants in large 19 gallon buckets. I bought two plants from a fellow at the farmer's market here in Pocatello. The names are Mortgage Lifter (neat story about how this was named on the internet) and Pineapple. They are heirloom tomatoes so we will see how they do. I sure wish I had known about the Ida Gold. I will definitely have to try that one next year. I have one more bucket for a small cherry type tomato. I am going to go to a nursery near here today and see what they recommend.

HI fellow, Idahoans! I just read Lizzy's comments and have already written Amy. Lizzy, I can't believe the weather we're having. 88* for the past few days and now it will cool down to 81. Not what May is suppose to be. I hope we don't get a freeze either. My plants are blooming way too soon and the bulbs don't last as long in this heat, me either! LOL Right now my pond guy down the street from me is back in action in my yard and is doing concrete and mason work. He'll continue putting river rock I collected from the Salmon river and various places. But I mainly like to collect the green, turquoise, blue, burgundy, white quartz looking and different rocks with white veining in them. He, my mason and neighbor is putting them on the walls of my waterfall and pools, and making a stream bed with them. They bring special memories to me, especially since the son that helped me gathered much of them died last year at age 15 1/2. My gardens have been my therapy and I have been also working on a Memory Garden in his name and also one of my pond's are dedicated to him with his name also. His name is David. Anyway, I better move on. My mother had a terrible stroke on Tuesday and I saw her for a bit at the St Luke's hospital in Meridian. This time her stroke is very serious and can only be fed through her stomach. My 6 other siblings and my dad need to make some decisions on what to do next. The siblings all live out of state. As she cannot swallow or drink, and her speech is not good either. Anyway, sorry to lay this on you, but I'm stunned myself and in a fog. The doctor said she has had many little strokes for the past year or so which explains her memory failure and Childish behavior. Wow, should not have been gone so long. Look at all the beautiful rose pics I have been missing out on! They are BEAUTIFUL! Overall my babies did pretty good. Not as good as last years blooms and not as much growth as I had hoped for. I lost a few but replaced them with many, many more... Here is a pic this last season after more digging,planting and remodeling but before the nasty snow hit Here are a couple of my own seedlings grown from seed I live in a cold zone 4b. I do not protect my roses. I have been weeding out those that will not survive here and replacing them with zone 3-4 roses that need no protection. For the most part I will not know how my new babies will do until the new season. Last years zone 3-4 planted roses came back perfect this season. There was very little to no die back. I live in Missoula, Mt. We have 3 zones; 5 in Big Flat area, 4b-4c in the valley, and 3 in upper Rattlesnake area. My backyard is a 4b, while my front garden bed is 5 (South facing against the house). I grow kale, beets, spinach, swiss chard, radishes, bunching onions, leaf lettuce, peas, green beans & cucumbers from seed, bulb onions from sets, & squash, pumpkin, tomatoes, & peppers from greenhouse plants in my backyard garden. The soil is heavy clay, so I build on top of it by either the "Lasagna" (layered) method or in raised beds using the Ruth Stout "No Dig Gardening" method. I also grow many perennial & annual flowers. Seed potatoes are important for using in the garden but it doesn't negate the grocery store potatoes if you can't find the seed potatoes. And really, home gardeners may just need a few potatoes to start, so grabbing a few of those shouldn't hurt anything. If you want to go more organic to get a faster start, then buying them from the natural food grocery stores in Collin County should be helpful, too. You can grow them in the ground but the idea behind the containers or bags is just so that it's easier to mound up the plant as it grows, as well as having soft, easy soil to dig through when it's ready to harvest. Besides Lowes and Home Depot which may have some seed potatoes in small quantities, Collin County also has a few Tractor Supply Company stores, as well as Wells Brother Feed Store in Plano and Collin County feed store in Allen. There maybe more around, too. Give those places a call to see if they have seed potatoes.
