Unknown ID, very subtle variegation, kinda big plant

I will post one more pic of the full plant. Any ideas?

Can you photograph it from the side?

Also, where would you have likely gotten this from? Big box store, nursery or hosta specialty seller?

My initial guess is Regal Chameleon.... especially if the variegation fades by mid summer.

That's ok Phil. I realized it was either a brain/finger mis-comunication or a misreading. Happens all the time. LOL I looked around some more and found some of your pictures, Phil. Lovely! Can't wait to have more time to look. Coral, I do have more time now and will have even more after May 2012! Woohoo! I'm also in the Charlotte area. When I get things going, you'll have to come over for coffee. And Ken, I have, gulp, sweet gum trees ... lots, and Lots and LOTS. The only redeeming thing about them is that they provide shade for shade loving plants. I did a bunch of research the year I worked on the one bed. I learned that I CAN build up and amend the soil without killing the trees IF I do it slowly. I did plant a dogwood in that bed that is doing well. The other things I planted in that bed are encore azaleas, a lace cap hydrangea (not doing too well due to neglect), astilbe, heuchera and caladiums which went by the wayside LONG ago. Where I come from in TX, caladiums are perennials. Not so here. So I dug the tubers up to replant in the spring. Then my dh, (bless his ever lovin' helpful heart) threw away my "box of dried up potatoes". Still, I'll keep him. He indulges me. And I let him. Good grief. I KNOW I posted concerning your plant last night but I don't see it here...lol lol. I wonder if I posted it in another thread? I wondered if you were near Lake Michigan when you discovered your plant? DH says it looks like plants he has seen in that area. He is from Michigan originally and his kids and grands still live there. I have sent an email to my good friend in PA with a photo of your plant to see if it looks familiar to her and perhaps she can ID it. She is away on a trip at this time. I still think it looks like some kind of grassy ground cover to me. The blooms are pretty insignificant compared to the lovely foliage. But the bloom does resemble Allium and some Agapanthus blooms. It is the foliage which is so hard to identify. Have you thought of printing out the photo and taking it to a nursery to see if anyone can give you an ID? I still have not given up hope to help you identify it. G.M.

My experience with Thai Chilis is the the Thai Hot. It doesn't match the size or growing style at all. My hots grew upright in bunches. The shape is fairly close but a bit fatter than my Thai Hots. Could possibly be another variety of Thai chili though. I am growing Thai Dragons this year in addition to the Thai Hots this year again. But I don't know if they are similar or not. When we remodeled the kitchen in the 100+ year old condo unit that we owned we needed to bring it up to code. The kitchen had only 2 electric outlets in it. When the electricians attempted to run wiring to one wall of the kitchen we were surprised to find out that that wall was concrete block covered with plaster. The electricians had to make channel cut in the blocks to run the wires through. Talk about dust! With all the holes that had to be made in all the walls, the contractor decided to cover the walls with 1/4 inch dry wall rather than trying to blend in all the patching. It turned out great but no one told the cabinet guy that behind that nice new drywall lurked a concrete block wall. I was there the day he was installing the cabinets by himself and he couldn't figure out why he his electric drill/screwdriver was having trouble. I suddenly remembered about the block wall. Time for a different drill bit! Also we had refinished all the hardwood floors in the place before we did the kitchen, if only we had known that beneath several layers of linoleum in the kitchen were the same great maple floors that were in the rest of the place. We felt bad about covering them up with some tile-look laminate but at that point it was too late to go through the floor refinishing process again.. I bet that you will find the pine flooring under your kitchen floor layers. I am sure that a good floor refinisher will get them to match the other floors even with any patching that might be needed. Hi Melissa, I got many hostas from Plant Delights, a nursery called Hosta Farm that's no longer around, mail order from Bridgewood Gardens, Hallson's, Naylor Creek, etc. Quite a few were from trades. I am certain I've never heard of Royal Chameleon. Here is a photo from the side. It's almost dark, but it has sort of a vaselike growth habit.

The vase-like shape is definitely like my Regal Chameleon, but if you don't recall buying it, that would be a rule out.

Regalia might be another option. I definitely think it's in the Krossa Regal family. The color is right and the shape is right. This pic is Regalia

That looks a lot like mine as well, but I don't recall purchasing or getting that one either :( I think I bought Forest Shadows once. I wonder if that could be it? Are you familiar with that one? It's possible that the variegation gets more distinct as the season progresses.

Thanks for that link, Paul. None of those Krossa Regal sports sound familiar, either. I don't remember ever even purchasing Krossa Regal. Maybe I'll figure this out one day! I will watch it to see what happens to the variegation over the summer and see what the flowers looks like. Maybe that'll help.

By any chance could this plant be Jim Matthews? I do recall purchasing it in the past and it's highly likely it was planted in this vicinity. Thoughts?

Jim Matthews has a twistier leaf and a much whiter center. How about Devil's Advocate?

What about George Smith? Does the color get more defined as the season goes on? That sounds like a familiar name. Paula, what do you think?

I have some measurements for this hosta that I hope will help with ID. Also, the variegation seems to be getting stronger on the oldest leaves compared to last week's photo.

24 inches tall, 40 inch span, leaves are 7 inches wide and 9 inches long

Any more suggestions for what this hosta could be?
