Verigated hindu rope hoya

I have both vergigated hindu rope and solid green rope. My solid green rope is doing well. the leaves on it are hard/succulant. Well the problem is my verigated rope is not hard like it was when I first got it. My verg and solid hindu are both in east windows, water when dry. Anyone have any ideas what the problem is? I can take a picture but not sure if you will be able to tell a difference.

I also have 2 kp, both southern windows different rooms next to eachother. One is good the other seems to have the same problem as my verg. hindu rope.

When I first started growing hoyas I didn't mist them, then I started misting not more then once a day or once every couple days and now I seem to be having problems with some of my plants. So needless to say I have stopped doing it.

Could it be that some hoyas like to be misted and some do not?

I got the VF-11 and I haven't used it yet. I am going to do that tonight I have read on this forum somewhere that sometimes you can see and immediate difference.

Are you saying the Hoyas in question have soft or wrinkled leaves? If so, that's usually a sign of dehydration. They likely aren't taking up water the way they need to, which usually is the result of letting them get too dry too often. I have this problem when I try to put a newly rooted cutting into a pot of established Hoya. The rooted cutting needs more water than the established plant, so it dehydrates. So now I always let the rooted cutting get a strong root system of it's own before I put it in with an older established plant.

Misting shouldn't be causing the problem, but I wouldn't mist quite so much this time of year. Molds form pretty easy in winter when it's cooler at night and there isn't as much air movement. I only mist mine when I water this time of year, which means once every week or 10 days.

thanks for your advice denise. I will water my rope more often. will the leaves pull out of the (soft) rubbery state if I start watering more frequently? I feel bad for my little cutting now, it is probably just thirsty.

You can do that. Or..you can wind it up & over the top of the pot or around the hanger. I have made mine very impressive looking by winding it around & up & over. You can secure with orchid clips. If you do trim, you can start cuttings, but beware this variety is VERY slow to grow. I have cuttings I made 2 years ago & they have hardly grown at all. :-( Just thoughts on the matter. Found out this morning that they do still give ribbons. Any plant placing 1st,2nd or 3thrd gets a sticker with that on it. In order to get an actual ribbon the plant must have earned at least 95 points and won first place. I did get a 1st place but don't know what the points were,1st is between 90-100. had my plant earned 95 points it could have won the award of merit which would have been a ribbon and is only awarded to a single specimen per show. Michelle, I tend to keep all of my hoyas including the rope,evenly moist. They do sometimes dry out a bit but it's quite hot and humid here during the spring and summer months so that's to be expected. I can tell you from personal experience that if you allow that hindu rope to stay dry for too long and it gets mealy bugs,then you have a problem and I mean a MAJOR one!!! When allowed to dry out for long periods of time a hindu rope quickly becomes a magnet for mealies and they are not so easy to get rid of on this hoya once it becomes infested. My advice to you in regards to your plant would be to not allow it to stay too dry for too long. My plant in the pictures above has had mealies in the past and I had to fill a 20 gallon tub with insecticide and submerge the entire thing,twice to get rid of them. Thankfully now it is bug free and I try to keep it evenly moist so it will stay that way.

You want to cut just above a node (see illustrations). Yes, peduncles will eventually form from new growth; however, taking a cutting or two will not have a huge impact on the ability of the plant to bloom. Take cuttings off the shorter parts of the plant, as they have a bit of time before they will produce peduncles.
