Please help...verigated kerrii.

My heart leaf verigated kerrii, is in a Eastern window.

I am having problems with my kerrii, I have lost one leaf and I am in the process of loosing another. The first one kinda turned brown then the second got a brown spot on the edge of the leaf and then it is starting to yellow. I know yellowing leaves are a sign of overwatering but what about the browning. I read somewhere on here that kerrii's have a tendcy to loose new leaves, well there is a new leaf but that's not the one I am having problems with. Until recently I thought taking care of hoyas were easy. Maybe I am just getting too many that when a couple of them have issues I get stressed.

Yellowing is not only a sign of overwatering, it can also be a sign of underwatering - kerrii doesn't like to have wet feet though, so it's more likely that it would get overwatered than underwatered. Anyway, not sure what the brown is or why leaves are falling off - a pic would definitely help.

Also, what are the conditions it is in (besides eastern exposure, which I think is great for hoyas). How often are you watering, is it in fast draining soil, etc. I think you had mentioned you have been getting hoyas from Ebay - if it's from who I think it is, he tends to use very peaty soil. I usually end up repotting his plants into a loose mixture, especially when I notice problems (my kerrii from him initially had brown spots on the leaves and it got better as soon as I put it into a soil I feel more comfortable with - but I never had yellowing or dropping of leaves).

I think kerrii was one of the first Hoyas I got that wasn't a carnosa-related Hoya and I had some trouble with it the first couple of years. It would put on a bit of new growth and look happy, then it would drop a few leaves and be back to where I started. It seems like when it really started to do well for me was when I got my GH, where I keep it on the top shelf getting maximum sun and heat all year long. It gets pretty dry between waterings - it's the one that I always hesitate before watering. If I have any doubts at all about how much moisture there might be in the pot, I wait a few more days.

Your zone is pretty close to mine (not sure if you're in northern or southern MO), so if I were you and you have a south window, I'd move it to get more light during the winter months. This will also make it dry out faster in case it's just staying too cool and wet too long.

Sometimes you see people posting when a new stem grows out of these rooted leaves, and sometimes they proudly say, "See! These CAN grow into a plant!" Truth is, they can only grow into a viable plant if at least a small bit of what's called meristem happens to be attached to the petiole. Meristem contains cells than can turn into stem and other plant parts, with some nudging by hormones and other plant-produced chemicals. These cells are basically stem cells that can start quickly dividing and so lead to the plant growing. If they are not present, no amount or nurturing is going to help, as the plant (the leaf) does not "know" how to grow a new growing stem point and does not have the means for it, so it just sits there growing roots, the only thing it knows how to do. Come to think of it now, I wonder why those valentine leaf farms do not deliberately include a tiny bit of stem under the ground on the leaf - to surprise future growers with a shoot more likely happening. I guess cutting is two seconds more time-consuming (you're not simply snipping off the leaf anymore), and with larger area of the cut there is a(n insignificantly) higher probability of infection... But if they did that, I might even be ok with them charging $12 for it. Maybe. Do leaves regrow in the same node if you snip them off, I wonder? If they do, the producers might not be including the stem because they do not want to cut into it and have to wait longer for the new leaves.

Thank you all for your advice! so the spots on the bottom came off when I wiped them away. But the top stops were embedded in the plant stems. Is it possible that mealy bugs started on the bottom, then the newer growths became infected within the plant? I am curious as to the small green/yellow growths that you can see coming out of the stem. Here is what i did: i cut the stem from the point where the white spots were not removable and the growths occured, used hydrogen peroxide to wipe away all the spots that did come off (towards the bottom of the plant), then sprayed the entire plant with a water and detergent mixture. I hope this saves it! Tomorrow, I will go pick up some Bayer Tree & Shrub, like Michelle suggested.

That's a good idea about moving it to a southern window.

My mixture is: regular potting soil, orchid bark, and perlite (1:1:1 ratio - in other words, equal parts of each).

Ok, I moved my verg. kerrii to a southern window a couple of days ago so we'll see how it goes.

Gabi - I do the same mixture except the orchid bark, so I will start adding that to my mixture. thanks
