Hi everyone,

I'm sending for my sample of VF-11 from Eleanor tommorrow!

I've been wanting to buy it for sometime now and I finally got the chance! I've heard nothing but good about it and hopefully will do my non-blooming hoyas some good!

Brad there is nothing like Eleanor's VF-11 I bought the one gallon size at my Ace hardware and now would never be without it.

Aww I'm sorry you missed it but so sweet of your hubby to send you a picture! The first bloom is important to me too so I understand why you are bummed. Glad you got to see it though! Just pretend like the 2nd bloom is the 1st hehe :o)

Ohh..I learned the hard way that it was MUCH easier to take someone's advice that is in written form the wrong way ..too easy to put your own spin on the "tone" of what they are saying...sooooo, I try to give everyone the benefit of the doubt and be grateful for any advice I get...it was a good point to make though and I thank you for it.. Now I still have to figure out what's best to plant ... So, for example, if I were to go with either Polish spirit or xtriternata rubra marginata, which grow to about 20' and my fence is close to 100 ft I would need 5 plants, planted every 20 feet, I suppose..correct? And, since they are deciduous, I'm wondering if there is something I plant in between them, or instead of a couple of them, that would give a different look when the clematis are losing their leaves... Ohhhhhhhhhhhh so much to think about

Bryan, 1. The most important tip I have is that it ALL starts with the soil. Taking the time to prepare soil properly pays dividends over and over again. Many common problems can be traced back to soil that is too heavily compacted and lacks organic material. 2. Gardening is easy as long as you put the right plant in the right place. This sounds so easy as to be laughable, but it is a "rule" many people ignore. If you plant something that MUST have good drainage in slow-draining soil, for example, that plant will always struggle there. Likewise, with sun exposure. Plants that need full shade to dappled shade will NEVER survive for long in full sun, for example. 3. Rely on resources that are relevant to OUR soil and our growing conditions. Many gardening books tend to be aimed at the northeast and eastern seaboard and their climate is much different from ours. The same is often true of plant tags/labels. You can't take what they say as gospel because their info is generic and often doesn't apply to our climate. There are only a few books aimed specifically at Oklahoma gardeners, but I have found that any books aimed at Texas gardeners are equally applicable to us as well because our states have similar soil and growing conditions. 4. Expect plants here to get larger than reference material says they will, and expect it to happen in a shorter time frame. Because our growing season is VERY long, happy plants can become huge monsters very quickly. Space your plantings accordingly. 5. Chemicals create more problems than they solve. I am NOT a die-hard organic maniac although I do prefer to grow organically as much as possible. I am 49 years old and have been gardening since I was big enough to walk around and follow my dad (and grandparents) in the lawn and garden. When I was a kid in the 1960s, chemical usage (and LOTS of nasty stuff like DDT were still used) was the norm. And, it seemed like no matter how many chemicals you used, the pest problems got worse and worse. Now that I am older, I understand WHY that occurred. In the natural world, EVERY single pest that we think is a problem in our yards and gardens has one or more predators that prey on that pest and help keep the population at manageable levels. When we use chemicals, though, we disrupt that process. "Bad bugs" always rebound more quickly than the "beneficial insects" that help control them, so once you kill off the beneficial insects, the bad ones quickly overpopulate and do devastating amounts of damage. Working WITH nature to control pests in the most natural way possible is the smarter long-term strategy. And, I have to give my dad and grandfather credit. The longer they gardened, the more organic they became because they figured out for themselves that chemicals gave a fast fix but caused more problems than they solved. In the latter years of my dad's life, he gardened almost completely organically, and with much more success and less stress than he experienced back in the day when he used chemicals. 6. Life is not perfect and our gardens never will be perfect. Plants get eaten and there is no way to completely prevent that. They get sick and still survive. However, in most situations the plants do survive "the crisis" and regrow and move on. We gardeners have to learn to relax and not overreact to every hole in a leaf or to every splotch of bacteria or fungus on our plants. In the long run, Mother Nature corrects most problems if we let her. 7. Mulch is worth its' weight in gold. Well-mulched soil stays cooler, holds moisture longer, has lower rates of soil-borne diseases and has improved tilth and drainage. 8. Compost is a thousand times better for your garden than peat moss. Compost is alive and peat moss is dead and that is really all you need to know. You can stil use peat moss, but understand that it will not feed your soil and plants the way compost and other organic materials will. 9. Overwatering and overfertilizing harm and kill far more plants than underwatering and underfertilizing. This phenomenon has a name and it is called "loving your plants to death". This lesson is a very hard one to grasp and many gardeners garden for years (or even decades) before they finally "get it". 10. Gardening ought to be fun, enjoyable and a positive experience. You can only control so much and the rest of it is in the hands of a higher power. Do your best to plant the right plant in the right place in properly prepared soil, feed and water it correctly, and then leave it alone! Don't stress over factors like weather that are beyond your control. Don't be a control freak. Relax. Enjoy. Stress less. Gardening is a journey, and not a destination, so enjoy the trip. Thanks, Chi - rice is the one thing I find very difficult to give up! I've made cauliflower rice at home a few times and it's really quite good. One of my favorite things to do with cauliflower is to make a mock potato salad. Steam qualiflower until it is of the softness of boiled potatoes. Remove from heat and chops into bite sized pieces. Using your favorite potato salad recipe, substitute the cauliflower for potatoes. Very Important: Make sure cauliflower is completely dry before adding to the salad; otherwise any retained water will make the salad dressing turn runny. I'll report back after I make the lasagna, but it won't be until after April when I'm back in my home kitchen. There is a kitchen here, but no oven, only a stove top and microwave.

Ok, tell me more, I've never heard of this. The website lists no contents. From reading the website it sounds like another product I'm familiar with whose bottle I can see but I can't remember the name off the top of my head. Miracle something. Or medina. Which is available here.

Eleanor keeps the ingredients hush hush but whatever is in it all plants love it and re-act to it by perking up and looking and growing better.
You may be thinking of SuperThrive? I personally don't like the stuff.
No one can go wrong buying VF-11! A friend bought 3 gallons and I bought one of his gallons. So I'm set for awhile now.,,,Debbie

That was going to be the next secret I was going to tell you, it sets down roots fast, all plants grow faster and better, follow directions. Vines do especially well, and in two week your Hoya well, use it and see. I would not be without it as well, I was say going to say use it in the water of cuttings if you choose to root in water. (Sansevieria) It is what the rest of the gang says it is. Your going to have to put up with my misspelled words,

Carolyn Do you have Fred Meyers near you. I have to cross the broader in to Bellingham to buy VF-11.Next spring I will be getting the big jug of it.The small bottle with freebie attached right now is 7.99 and the big jug is 21.00. I was there on Monday.This is the scound time I have gotten it and I am sold on the stuff.

Hi,
I live in SE Montana, and the only person that sells it lives on the other side of this big ol state. I pay a lot for shipping, approx. $8.00 a gallon, but I, like the others, won't be without it. . .

I am stingy with mine, I don't let it go down the drain, I catch the draining water and use it up on the rest of my plants. . . I spray it on too, sometimes in between waterings, but ALWAYS when I water as well.

You can send for a free sample ($3.00 shipping) but that's kind of a waste of time, you might as well buy a gallon cuz you're going to love it. . .

Eleanor probably loves this website, it has to be making her rich. . . hope so shes a sweetheart. . .

Norma, glad to hear you use it too! I buy it direct from Eleanor, a case (4 gallons) at a time. I bottle it up in 32 oz. (peroxide) bottles and sell some to a few of my fellow C&S club members, but I use it up pretty darned fast. I water it in and I foliar feed, too. I've been using it... well, probably 4 years or so, and I LOVE it. I've never had so many blooms as I have since I found it.

Who knows what's in it, Beachplant! Whatever it is, it works!

Guess have to mailorder it and give it a try. I think superthrive might be what I was thinking of. That or medina. I'm not too big on fertilizing, stuff grows fast enough without any help from me. As it is you need machete in the backyard right now. I prefer organic so use fish emulsion when I do. I've been thinking of experimenting with seaweed next spring when it all starts washing up on the beach. Just how to get all the sand out?
Thanks for the info on this. I may order a sample and see, I imagine shipping is going to be a lot!

It's up to you, I personally swore by the sample (which at 8 oz. is quite generous).

Whenever we really got going w/ this (for me maybe 2 yrs. ago), I discovered Ace won't order it to NY State (I forget what the reason for the prohibition was, but there was one).

I ended up getting mine (but backordered) from Charley's Greenhouse (I don't recall where, maybe PNW).

I only water it in but just this week I went out & got a mister so I can do the foliar feeding some of you rave about!

Whoever's thinking about Superthrive, no, this does not compare. With that, some folks like it & some folks don't (personally, I never saw the difference). W/ VF-11 one can literally see the difference the next day. I'll never forget someone here reviewed it in 24 hrs. of their use, I was floored (Leon maybe). I teased him how fast that was, but he said he could really see the difference & he was right. The plants just seem to perk up, like they're standing at attention!

(I have no financial interest in this at all, just another crazed Hoya grower who loves it.) Gee, maybe we should consider asking Eleanor for a GW/Hoya Forum discount since I'm guessing almost ALL of us use it! And, we send the newbies (like Brad, the OP) along too.

Thank you all for your comments. I will post when I do get my sample. I'm in PA so it'll take a little while longer to wait for it (like spring, but that's another story).

Quick question for all of you: how long did it take for you to get your sample of VF-11? It will be one week tommorrow since I sent for it. I hate to sound impatient but I just can't wait until it arrives!

Hi,
I ordered Eleanor's VF-11 and it arrived within 3 weeks. I spoke with her on the phone and she's very friendly. I've been using VF for a few months now and my hoyas seem to really like it. I spray and water. I was able to find it at an Armstrong nursery in Torrance.
