Pretty...it's wonderful to pick roses from one's own garden, especially fragrant ones. Ahhhh...I wish the modern roses smelled more fragrant. All the cloning and grafting has its downsides...

Woody, that link worked fine and it was nice to have a look back at gardening years past! You weren't kidding about them blooming at just a few inches, it looks as if they were still in pots and sending up flowers. Thanks for the seed offer but my roses are already on borrowed time with Rose Rosette disease running rampant in the wild multiflora roses and then here and there spreading to garden plants. I'm trying to avoid adding new ones until things settle down... Cyclamen purpurascens seems to be my hardiest, but it flowers midsummer and doesn't go dormant like the other two, which makes it harder to work in than the others. Don't be jealous of the grass. It's perfectly hardy, but frost fades the flower heads and it blooms so late I'm lucky if I get to enjoy the color for more than a few days. Much better suited to the South. Nice to see so many fall flowers. Fall is by far not my favorite season and if it came down to a vote I don't think it would even make the top three but each year I dread it less. Throwing in the gardening towel in September makes for a very long winter, so I'm glad to still have things to enjoy for a few more weeks!

That’s a GREAT reminder for all of those newbies out there, Karen. ~wink~ For your variegated jade leaves can you tell yet if the new growth has any variegation? I had a leaf that had some nice variegation but none of the new growth had any. It reverted back to all green which I understand is pretty common. But I’ve also heard that sometimes the variegation does remain.

Awesome, Shade! Some of these are new to me this year, and I can't wait for them to get this size! I love the contrasting colors of the heucheras together. What is the green leaf plant in that picture that has the purple markings? I have something similar, but I thought it was a weed!

Karen not sure which pic? If the heuchera pic, the plant on the far left with the red markings is a heucherella called Stoplight, heuchera on the right side of the hosta is Venus. Just in case you meant the photo with El Capitan, the plant at the bottom with red markings is a Tiarella.

Karen, if you are referring to the plant at the 11-12 oclock position it is called Knotweed/Persicaria (probably 'Painter's Palette'). It will also have some white splashing in leaves.

Yes, Paul, that is the one I'm referring to--Knotweed, huh? Well, I thought it was a weed...now is it a good weed? I'll have to check it out!

Karen it is Persicaria, also known as Tovara and the variety is Painter's Palette as Paul said. I probably wouldn't call it knotweed cause I kinda like this plant. I can tell you it is a very free sower, some would say invasive. However it is not hard for me to pull out and I like it for a filler. I also like the pretty red beaded flower spikes in late summer.

All types of plants have not so great names - knotweed, thimbleweed, Bellwort, Bugbane, Joe Pye Weed, Lungwort, .... just working names.

Thanks, Shade--I did read that it can be invasive, but after a couple of years of pulling it up in the early stages, I find that I have almost eradicated it. Went out yesterday and found only a couple of small plants, so I'll leave them alone and see what happens.

I agree, Paul, about the names of some plants--it keeps gardening interesting, doesn't it? ;)

Karen looking around my garden I see that I have more Painter's Palette than I realized. It just kind of fills in the background. You might not want to let it flower if you don't want any extra plants, just a thought.
Marquest, lol! We want to see pix of your garden too, I know it must be lovely, and you have a lot of hercs as I remember. Heucheras are rapidly becoming my second favorite perennial. Hostas better watch out cause slugs don't eat heucheras in my garden, the heucheras are evergreen and they come in colors.
I'd love to visit Pa someday, til then I'll visit you on the other garden site:-)
