Hi Nance, There may be no explaining it. I have rows and rows of hostas and out of 20 in a row, two or three might be toasted and the rest almost undamaged. I have 3 sections of Red October, covered two, yet the third, uncovered row did the best. Objects in the garden can radiate heat, so a hosta near a tree will be more protected than one two feet away. Or the opposite could happen, that a tree blocks a warmer breeze and frost settles on the side that wasn't getting a breeze. There are so many different variables that you may never fully explain it, other than yes, 5 to 6 feet away can make a difference.

I bought my Liberty last year from a local nursery. I planted it in a large pot since I am out of ground room and have had good success with another hosta living in a pot for about six years now and it is doing remarkably well there. My Liberty had two eyes last year when I put it in the pot. This spring when it started coming up it just kept going and going - I have seven eyes now!!! This is one robust plant and stunning to boot!

Oh wow, Naylor started my week out with a shipment arriving on Monday, send a second which arrived Thursday I think, because other arrivals were from Hornbaker and Mason Hollow. Then today, not to be outdone, two big boxes arrived from Chris at Hallsons. My cup runneth over. I apologize for any typos here. I ate a cPhilly chease steak sandwich with a big red jalapeno on the side, and forgot about the pepper on my hand. I am typing with my eyes closed and tearing out of my right eye. This is after a good bit of eye drops.... It poured again today, just finished actually, and I cannot deal with the potting up issues today. Maybe in the morning early early. It is beautiful in the morning. I have enough new pots in my SUV to do them all up and place in the shade spots.
