Is it normal to see rot from previous year prior to seeing new

This may sound like a dumb question. I have a June hosta that has been in a huge pot for about 6 years. Always overwinters very nicely. I am in Zone 5 (southeastern Michigan). Should I be seeing any new eyes yet? (05/08/2014) Also, should I see rotted roots from last year at the top of the pot at this time? I am concerned that I lost my most beautiful June hosta because of the excessive snow this past winter. Please help!

you did not lose it due to cold.. nor snow ... but a potential hundred other reasons ...

if the crown rotted .. and all that is left is unattached roots.. its probably dead...

even down here in adrian MI ... the pips are showing.. though barely extending ...

a pic might be worth another hundred words ...

My lilies have suffered the most. Several completely died back. They'll be back next year hopefully, but I don't know if it was the cold, the wet, or a combination of both that killed them back yet. If it was both, they may not come back. My nasty red climbing rose has blooms all over it, altho the leaves did suffer damage, and the ubiquitous black spot is taking hold. I don't spray it, it will just have to look horrible. I would love to give it to someone who wants to try to dig it out of a precarious location. It is planted right next to the house and there is a permanent plant shelf that has been there since I moved it, so it will be difficult to dig between it and the house (only about a 8-10" space"). I never use the plant shelf. It holds 3 pots and looks kind of like a book shelf, with only one shelf per stand. Kind of striking in appearance actually, but I'm afraid the wind in Oklahoma would knock down any pots planted on it. So, it's purely decorative in nature. What else suffered? A lot of things suffered hail and wind damage, like the petasites japonica, hostas, the acanthus, all larger leaved plants. Dawn, my elderberry leaves are turning a mottled yellow/green - does this mean an iron deficiency or what? They can take a lot of water, so I don't think it's that. I didn't think they really needed fertilizer, so I haven't fertilized it. Just wondering. Katrina, I'm glad your shrubs and trees are coming out of it. Just be patient. The temps have been so cool, that everything growing really well before they hit, has slowed down a LOT! For instance, my aristolochias were growing gangbusters, but haven't grown at all since the cold hit us. Lots of things just standing still. It's really weird, too, because I have morning glories popping up that I just planted about 2 weeks ago. Now, they need tons of warmth, so I'm totally shocked that they are coming up. Could be the soil is still warm, and just the above ground plants are being affected. Very strange spring IMHO. But, with the soil still warm, you should be okay and start experiencing growth once the temps warm up consistently again. Susan

when a plant is young and healthy it has new roots. when the roots get old the plant is old. old roots have problems the roots might be sick. the best thing in my mind is to take a cutting of the old plant and root it. plant the new rooted cutting and you have a new plant on new roots. if the soil is fresh the plant should give big peppers again. there is also the possibility that the plant picked up some germs, pathogens, disease, virus etc of the roots that is holding it back. dont know. but I do know that Young new plants on young new roots grow well. Old plants on old roots grow like old people. I am old. and so I understand it from experience. I just can not do what I could do when I was young. Your soil in that spot might now have pathogens holding back the plant. so a new plant in the same spot might not grow like the first one did. the soil can get depleted also. I would root a new cutting and add a lot of new fresh compost to the spot before putting in the new plant.

I also can understand the *feeling* and the emotions (hurt, betrayal, anger, etc.) it might dig up. But I also think it is so important as parents to not project OUR feelings and emotions onto our children. Our children are separate individuals, not extensions of ourselves. They are entitled to form their own opinions and relationships with family members, independant of what our feelings might be. This reminds me so much of how BM has behaved in the past. She has never liked the fact that DH was with me (even though I didn't come on the scene until over a year after their breakup!) and I think she's always felt threatened by our family unit. She's admitted in the past to feeling jealous. And those feelings are hers, and that's okay. I can empathize with them. But what isn't okay is to project them onto her son, which is what she did for many years. Thankfully, she's better about it than she used to be, but she spent a good 3-4 years reminding SS that I wasn't his mom, that it was so sad that his dad loved me and DD more than him (TOTALLY UNTRUE) etc. She projected HER feelings of hurt and anger onto SS and that did a lot of damage to him over the years. KKNY might FEEL displaced if a new sibling is referred to as a sibling and not a half-sibling. But at the end of the day, isn't it up to her daughter to determine a relationship with her father, and any subsequent children he might have? Ditto Silver. KKNY's DD, I am sure, knows the dynamics and understands who her mother is. A sibling vs. half sibling debate doesn't change that fact.

I still don't see how water on the inside sill could be caused by the stucco installation if flexible self-adhering flashing was properly installed over the nailing fins. Has that been eliminated as a cause yet? I am suspicious that self-adhering flashing might not be used in this location. IMO exposed sealant is little more than a gap filler in the long run since the sealant will eventually need to be removed and replaced. Such details are inappropriate for buildings that will not have on-going maintenance programs, budgets and building managers. There is a price to be paid for clean modern minimalist facades and the systems are changing so fast its difficult to understand how to install them. It wasn't so long ago when window manufacturers refused to provide installation advice but then they discovered they could use it to void warranties. I think they are by far the poorest source for that kind of information. If they knew how to build buildings they would design better windows.

I think I have lost many potted hostas this year due to the harshest winter since I started my garden. Mine have always overwintered well too, but I think this winter with the extreme cold and heavy snow was too much for the ones I didnt protect. I expect the few potted ones that did survive to be quite set back. I even have a rotted one in a buried spinout bag, which is odd to me since those drain so well.

Most of the perennials, including hosta, that I had growing in containers didn't come back this year after surviving the past several winters in fine form. Spirea (grown from seed via winter sowing) did come through and is sending up healthy new growth but the container sits up close to the house wall and I'm guessing it received some measure of warmth/protection as a result. Heuchera/coral bells survived in a gallon pot set a couple feet from the spirea container as did rudbeckia, agastache, columbine, Siberian iris & lobelia cardinalis.

I think it is time to use May to search for another June ...

Call it your mother's day present. It is worth it.

If you aren't a mom, buy it as a tribute to your mom ...

Thanks for your help everyone. I think I knew it was dead, but was hoping it wasn't . It was so beautiful. Neighbors would comment on it when they walked by the house. It was my prized hosta. I actually cried when I looked at it.
I like your comment Dave. My mother has passed away but I will plant another June in memory of her.

If you push down on the crown is it firm? Are their any firm pointy eyes you can feel? You need to look at the roots. Can you dig down the side of the pot and see what is there? Don't give up yet.

Kris, I'm a long way from you, but I lost many to a dry winter this year. I had moved all the "empty" pots to one area to be dumped. I had been whining about my high losses through several posts. Babka finally said she wanted to see the roots. When I dumped one out, I found that deep in the pot, dormant roots were emerging. This was 2 or 3 weeks after my last one showed pips. So, don't give up yet.

Of course, it would be very small if it came back from dormant roots. But to have a piece of one you really liked might be nice. It will take years for it to become a full plant, though. Mine was a Bridegroom. I was so sure it was lost, that I already had ordered another. I'll probably add it to the pot with the new one if it makes it this year.

Also, since it's placement in your front yard was so important to your landscape, think about buying 3 plants and putting them in the pot. You will have a nice full pot sooner.
