I got an odorata from Logee's also. I got it in Sept. and put it along with several others outside around the on the dirt of a larger pot with a palm in it. These little plants got morning filtered sunlight and lots of humidity because they are located ight nest to the garden hose. That little plant (and the others) grew like gangbusters with several new sets of leaves before the cooler wheather hit and I moved them in. They haven't grown anymore since. They sure liked that dappled sun and warm humid place they were.

are you growing in an orchid bark-type mix, or is that top-dressing? If it's the actual mix, how does it work out for you? Do you grow other hoyas like this too? Just curious, and always looking for new tricks!

i only have the odorata and a splash (thanks awanda). my specialty is plumeria as if you couldn't tell. LOL

i'm not using an orchid mix. it's a mixture of sequoia forest humus (the good stuff from the forest floor), pumice and decomposed granite. the mix appears to work well. the hoyas have been in it since july.

The blooms on mine just opened today. I've had it for about a year. It hardly grew at all until I transplanted it to a clay pot and reduced the watering. Unlike another hoya I had years ago, this one doesn't seem to like too much sun so I keep it in a bathroom window where it gets filtered morning sun for a few hours at the most. It finally bloomed and I thought the buds would never open- they stayed the same size for at least a month. Finally one is actually opening as we speak. I can't quite describe the scent, but I like it. Any tips on keep this thing alive and healthy would be much appreciated! Thanks

i've been wondering when the buds are gonna open on mine. i've been waiting and waiting and you know - waiting. the smaller buds have almost caught up to the larger buds. maybe mine will be open when i get back to tucson.

mine is growing in the gh. the temps are mostly in the 70s during the day. we had a week of 80's in the gh recently. the nights are in the 50's to high 40's. it still seems to be growing. mine gets bright, diffused light during the day through 8-mil plastic.

please do describe the scent when i blooms. post a pic if you can.

i was opening up the gh this morning and noticed that one of the H. odorate blooms is starting to open. i has the sweetest honeydew fragrance! actually, the fragrance reminds me more of the smell that comes from a jar after you've caught honey bees in it. must be the hormone that they give off when upset. anyway, i'll post pics when they open fully. just 1 mm spit in the side of one now.

this plant is growing fast in the gh. daytimes temps are 70+. plus, now that i'm heating less volume in the gh, the nighttime temps have been near 60. maybe the extra heat has started the blooming process.

well, my H. odorata bloomed last night. i guess the warm temps helped. the gh hasn't seen temps below 60 degrees in the last 36 hours.

Does it have a strong smell like ya figured it would? Im thinking I remember reading this one doesnt have a pleasant smell. I hope Im wrong! hahaha.,,,,Debbie

you're wrong! LOL it has a pleasant fragrance. the smell isn't so strong that it fills the gh. i can smell it when it's close to my nose.

i'm no serious hoya grower by any stretch of the imagination. LOL however, i sure would recommend this one. it's been down to 35 degrees and lots of nights in the 40's. and through all that it's been putting out new growth and flower buds.

there are a total of three blooms open on my h. odorata. the frangrance can be smelled throughout the gh.

HI- Sorry I didnt see your posts before now. Congrats on your odorata! Great photos- sorry, I don't have the capability to do that. I think the warmth probably did help your buds open.

Mine has been in a holding pattern since it bloomed in December, and I'm beginning to "wonder". Not one bit of spring growth anywhere. I looked at the roots about a month ago and there were almost none compared to the size of the pot so believe it or not I potted it down to an even SMALLER clay pot. A month later, still nothing. It looks like it will never grow- the leaves from last year are fine but the growth tips are hardened and crusted over, and the roots are brown, thin and stringy. After scouring this website, I'm thinking I should change the potting mix to a more loose one by adding perlite.

How is your's doing? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hmmmm,,,,sounds it may have some root rot if the roots are brown and stringy. You may need to cut it off at the first good node above where it originally was rooted and reroot it before the leaves start to suffer.

by the way, my h. odorata did seem to hang on after repotting, and even started to show signs of impending growth this fall, but now seems to be suffering from the cool temperatures and has dropped a few leaves. I just put it in a warmer spot- hoping for the best. No flowers this winter.
