I posted this pic on the gallery, and it turned into a discussion about molting that I thought folks might find interesting.

I suggested that this bird was the same one I had seen last year because of its appearance. it looks like a cotton ball coming apart at the seams.

jp pointed out that this bird is molting, which I've learned means losing old feathers to replace them with new ones. he also provided a good link to an article in which bander bob sargent discusses fall molt in ruby-throateds. scroll down to #3 on the link below. if I understood the article correctly, body molt can happen at different times than wing and tail molt.

have you ever seen a hummer in molting stage?
