H. Kerrii Albomarginata vs. H. Kerrii Splash

I remember a discussion on this forum regarding growing problems with the variegated H. Kerrii. I was wondering if it's the H. kerrii 'albomarginata' or H. kerrii 'splash' that is the difficult one? I'm considering buying one or the other(or both!) from Asiatica. Thanks for any input.....

I haven't had a problem with either one and both have put on lots of growth. I do have them both potted in clay pots, they tend to get a bit top heavy.

I agree with Awanda they are both easy as pie to grow! I did have a problem with the 'Yellow Splash' (doubt that's the true name) losing it's variegation while growing it in my house. I moved it to my Greenhouse in BRIGHT light, where it gets almost full sun! The variegation is coming back exept on a small one!

Hi, thanks for the replies- This one hasn't been in sun until lately, I'm actually trying more heat and light to see if that helps. It had gotten bright diffused light until recently, and new growth still had the brown spots. No label from the grower. Maybe they were ashamed! The plant is moved outdoors to an Eastern exposure now. If the problem isn't all cleared up by Fall it will have to go to Hoya heaven. Can't risk spreading whatever it is everywhere :( Vincent

Hi all, Thanks for the kind words, just posted some other pix & found this last bit of perfection, I just can't get enough. LovinMyBlooms, yes, sorry was thinking in paint terminology, matte(e) vs. shiny or glossy. Don't have an answer about changes from glossy to matte, except maybe as reaction to current care. Guessing it could be light or water issues, don't know. Interesting question you may wish to post separately to start that as a discussion of its own. Hey there Denise, yes, thanks, it excites me just to look at this Hoya. It's not many Hoyas can reduce me to such a blithering idiot state, as this seems to. It grows next to its cousin speckled Kerrii & seems to be settling in nicely. Ingrid, Hi, yes, quite large a plant, espec. for (1) the price I paid & (2) it's only HALF the purchased plant. Mentha, Oh, good, I can keep spelling it the way it looks right to me then! Yay! Yes, I've seen the variegated obovata, I think it was one that CBFM was selling. I seem to recall he got a small fortune for it, too. I'll be waiting until it's a little more common in the trade and affordable before I get one... I'm with you about bigger plants. I'm not so much an advocate of the underpotting that seems to be popular with Hoyas. Seems like the ones that grow best for me (and in some cases, bloom too...) are the ones I keep in roomy pots. The problem I find with underpotting is that they dry out faster and might go unwatered a couple days too long, which I think is harder on them than a little extra "leg" room. My huge pubicalyx, which is in a 14" pot, has been potbound for years. It's just too big to move up a size. Even though it's been potbound, it's not a big bloomer. It blooms, mind you, but one here, one there. I think the most I ever had at once was 4, which isn't exactly a lot for a plant 3' high and almost as wide at the base. So, this summer, I've been watering it every couple of days, which kind of goes against my gut feeling. Well, it's been growing like crazy and putting on all kinds of new peduncles, so I think you really have to be craeful to water the potbound ones a LOT more. Denise in Omaha

Sorry it's taken me so long to reply to this thread. I'm not much of a poster on any of the forums that i belong to,I mostly lurk!!!! haven't even been doing much of that lately as the hoyas have been keeping me quite busy. When you work 10 hours a day 5 days a week,then come home to 4 pets,an 89 yr old stroked grandmother, 2 ill parents,and a collection of hoyas which is now rapidly approaching 450,it really doesn't leave time for much else!!! I have been growing my variegated obovata now for well over a year and the variegation is very stable. The coloration is still exactly as it was when the photo in the above link was taken. The plant has peduncles on it but has not bloomed yet but hopefully will soon. I have other variegated hoyas which will at times throw a few solid green leaves but so far the obovata has not,every single new leaf has come in variegated. My green obovata used to be just solid green leaves with no speckling until I moved it into higher light and then suddenly it became very heavily specked with silver streaks and spots on the leaves. For those of you who are not very familiar with variegation on hoya leaves,silver spots are not considered variegation although many Ebay sellers will knowingly and willingly lead you to believe that it is just to earn more of those almighty dollars!! I can name a few right now who list hoyas on a regular basis that advertise obovata and polyneura as variegated when all they are actually selling are plants that have been grown in high light and have developed silver spotting. I'm sure quite a few buyers have been very disappointed when they received those plants,grew them under different conditions that they were previously growing only to have them revert back to being solid green.Be CAREFUL when you are buying what is being advertised as a variegated hoya on Ebay,because in about 99.9% of the cases it is not true variegation,it's only silver speckling which can and most likely will disappear when you get and grow the plant under different conditions than what it was accustomed to. True variegation on the leaves will be in the form of either white,green or yellow. It can appear as streaks,borders,splotches,half a leaf or more. I have a new variegated clone of kerrii out of Thailand that has a patterned effect to it almost like it was painted on. It's really heavily splotched with green,yellow and white all over the leaf.

Hi Ladies (Hi Lesli!!!)

I hadn't heard the names H Kerrii Splash or Yellow Splash. Could this be what I here referred to as Kerri Reverse Variegate (which I have)? It's got a lighter greenish, sometimes yellow/greenish (not white) coloring down the center of leaf.

If it is the same thing, I'm finding it fairly easy. Tho' my single node + one leaf cutting took a 1.5 yrs. to take hold, it recently threw a new vine w/ 3 baby leaves.

Unlike my plain Kerrii, which vines first start bare & slowly & pokily make aerial roots & leaf buds, the Reverse Kerri put out new vines w/ baby leaf tips on them almost immediately. 2 of 3 baby leaves remain, going strong (no jinx here I hope!!)

Otherwise, I find this one pretty care-free & fairly fast growing.

Yup, The seller Grow Happy is talking about has the H. kerrii Reverse Varigate listed as 'Yellow Splash'. That was my first time ever seeing that name on it as well!

I am a sucker for heart shaped leaves on any plant, so I wanted to grow this one in my dining room where I could admire it most! When it started losing the variegation Mel told me to give it brighter light, which is bringing the coloring back!

Hi everyone,

I just wanted to let you know that I purchased the Albomarginata from Asiatica and received it in the mail today! It's beautiful and even has 3 peduncles. Here's hoping I get some blooms in the Spring!

They grow their Hoyas in coconut husks. I'd never seen this type of medium prior to today. It looks to be an excellent choice for Hoyas. Does anyone else here use coconut husks for theirs?

Hi GH,

& Yes, I used Coir in my mix (which is made from coconut husks) w/in the last 2 yrs. The Hoyas semed to love it for a while, but abt a year later I started having trouble & concluded that the Coir I was using broke down badly over time into a sort of saw-dusty kind of yucky mix that my Hoyas did not like. On changing their mix, most of them recovered, but I no longer use Coir for them. (Just for the Haworthias which also liked it & didn't seem to mind how it broke down).

I did forget to mention above that I had a lot of trouble w/ the H. kerrii albomarginata (white outer edge); several of us had found that one particularly difficult, but I shan't go into it here since you just got yours & are delighted I'm sure.

Especially w/ 3 new peduncles; may they live long & prosper. Congrats on yr. new acquisition!

I've been using coir for a few years now and find it works great for me. The very reason I switched to it was because my local C&S club has an expert (owner of Aridlands) who said it DOESN'T break down like peat-based mixes. (I know - a bit of a contradiction to what you've found, Karen...) He said that coir typically takes about 15 years to break down, whereas the standard potting mixes start to do so in about 6 months. Since Hoyas prefer to be potbound, and don't particularly like their rootballs disturbed, I thought coir to be the perfect medium. I mix mine with either perlite or clay soil conditioner to make it lighter.

..Yes I have two hoya's in coconut husks..I made a hole in them with my drill..lol...works and looks great,,Waiting for sping..getting the mid mild blues..wants to get growing things in my new greenhouse........but enjoying the light winters in Vancouver.

I recently purchased both these plants from Asiatic and they said I could put them in orchid mix which I did. I am new to Hoyas and would like to know how often to water these plants?
