There's a variegated obovata? I haven't seen that one yet. Can you post a link to the one you won? Picta has been used in conjunction with one of the variegated carnosas, but in reality, it's an actual species of a very small leaved, solid green Hoya. Here's the one I used to grow...

Congrats on your New hoya Billy Rae!! I would guess Var. Obovata probably has the same care as the regular one(which I have), but I would think from what I've read here it will probably be a little slower growing than the regular one. Probably takes longer to flower also? Just a guess.

I'm curious if anyone has growth the var. obovata for very long and how stable the variegation is? Seems like some of the variegates (like 'KP') try with all their might to revert back to all-green. Or with reverse-variegated kerrii, it's barely discernable unless it's grown in full sun outside. I bring it in for the winter and by spring, you can't hardly tell there was any variegation at all...

Oh no! I didn't even think about it reverting back! I would also like to know if anyone has had this hoya for a while, and if it's still holding it's variegation? I know have to wonder if the "heavily" spotted obovata reverts back to just a few spots?

Although there have been posted some examples of this hoya, here's the exact plant I won. The leaves look a little smaller in size then the green obovata, but not small, so the word "picta" attached by some sellers was throwing me.
As you can also see, prices will vary.

Yeah, this hoya does not look difficult, but you never know. I'm sure you know how some hoyas can be a little snotty:O)

Sorry to be a downer, but I don't especially trust this ID. Tho' I've never heard of a Variegated Obovata (I'm a variegate crazed person, so I might have heard of it), there could be such a thing.

But look at the leaf shape, it looks far too variable to me. Tho' I no longer have my Obovata (was one of my favorites), for the years I had it, it had real consistent leaf shape, a rounded tear shape.

If it's from Cowboyflowerman I'd be more likely to trust the ID; if just from EBay in general, frankly it looks like Krimson Princess to me.

Nice plant, don' get me wrong, I just doubt it's Obovata.

June 08 posted by David...I attached a link to it below. Maybe he will see your post and comment since he's had his a little over a year now. He certainly would be able to tell you if it stayed "variegated". Good luck!

The first time I laid on this variegated hoya, I wondered if it really was an obovata too.
Looking at the variegated one again, you can see an almost all green leaf to the right that looks a little deformed on the rounded end. There is a deformed leaf on my "green" obovata too with slight differences in a couple of the other leaves as well, pointing out that the leaves aren't always the same.The variegated hoya does appear to be an obovata, but it's always good to get other opinions.

I really appreciate the link! What a collection! It sounds like Davids gorgeous obovata is holding on to it's variegation so far which is really great to hear!

This plant grew from one of a few un-rooted cutting that some guy was selling online for $2, and he sent a fistful! unfortunately, he no longer sells plants, or has a site.

I have to ask, is there a green obovata without "any" speckles? I know there is a "heavily" speckled one, LOTS of silver/white in the leaves like h. pubicalyx "splash".
I just assumed all the green obovata's have "some" speckles???

I thought the same thing about Obovata, figured all of them had leaves with some speckling on them. Mine has a little on the leaves too, but I assumed mine was the plain green variety because it wasn't heavily speckled. It has one bloom right now...and a few peduncles are forming.

I just wish that guy was still around to get more bargains! The cuttings that I was sent (picked from a small list) consisted of h. obovata, Ruthie and Curtisii. He sent two big fistfuls of the curtisii. With the curtisii, I could NOT for the life of me root ANY of it, so I lost all of that one, very sad!
He charged $6 for shipping all of the cuttings which I thought was also a bargain, also found out he used to live only minutes from me until he moved to Georgia where he had his site.

Very nice! Your obovata looks just like mine as far as the spots go. Very nice flowers too! Mine has yet to flower. It's been outdoors all summer, same thing will happen next year so it can hopefully put out some of those beautiful flowers.

Sorry it's taken me so long to reply to this thread. I'm not much of a poster on any of the forums that i belong to,I mostly lurk!!!! haven't even been doing much of that lately as the hoyas have been keeping me quite busy.

When you work 10 hours a day 5 days a week,then come home to 4 pets,an 89 yr old stroked grandmother, 2 ill parents,and a collection of hoyas which is now rapidly approaching 450,it really doesn't leave time for much else!!!

I have been growing my variegated obovata now for well over a year and the variegation is very stable. The coloration is still exactly as it was when the photo in the above link was taken. The plant has peduncles on it but has not bloomed yet but hopefully will soon. I have other variegated hoyas which will at times throw a few solid green leaves but so far the obovata has not,every single new leaf has come in variegated.

My green obovata used to be just solid green leaves with no speckling until I moved it into higher light and then suddenly it became very heavily specked with silver streaks and spots on the leaves.

For those of you who are not very familiar with variegation on hoya leaves,silver spots are not considered variegation although many Ebay sellers will knowingly and willingly lead you to believe that it is just to earn more of those almighty dollars!!

I can name a few right now who list hoyas on a regular basis that advertise obovata and polyneura as variegated when all they are actually selling are plants that have been grown in high light and have developed silver spotting. I'm sure quite a few buyers have been very disappointed when they received those plants,grew them under different conditions that they were previously growing only to have them revert back to being solid green.Be CAREFUL when you are buying what is being advertised as a variegated hoya on Ebay,because in about 99.9% of the cases it is not true variegation,it's only silver speckling which can and most likely will disappear when you get and grow the plant under different conditions than what it was accustomed to.

True variegation on the leaves will be in the form of either white,green or yellow. It can appear as streaks,borders,splotches,half a leaf or more. I have a new variegated clone of kerrii out of Thailand that has a patterned effect to it almost like it was painted on. It's really heavily splotched with green,yellow and white all over the leaf.

I never considered the spotted one to be variegated, but like you mentioned, it has been called that to help it sell better.

Thanks for the great explanation and advise on buying variegated hoyas! Good to know that your Var. obovata had kept its variagations after over a year. 450+ Hoyas...WOW!! I don't know how you keep up with all that you have to do...you must not sleep much,lol...What a wonderful sight your greenhouse must be!!
