Hail to May

Storming last night and today - 1st hail of the season and couldn't have picked a better time with most of my hosta tightly furled or only eyes. Lasted all of about a minute with only pea size. I've been fortunate, has to be '06 for the last time any damage to hosta leaves.

From the title of your post, I thought I was going to see a new hosta with a pretty name, 'Hail to May', Lol.

Glad you didn't suffer any damage. No hosta has dared to poke out of the ground around here and won't for some time yet.

Hail does so much damage to leafed out hosta. Glad you're unhurt this time.

Jay, I'll be anxious to hear how that Mr. Bruno does for you. I recall when that seed was offered on the tomato board. Looked like a big beauty. BTW, I think I can get some of those CP PL seeds if you have any trouble contacting the others. :) Anxious to hear how the Anana's Noire does for you too. The only variety that I lost and didn't have a replacement for after the hail was Ugly, but I can try that next year. Sungold was nearly defoliated, but you wouldn't know that today. :) Spears Tennessee Green, which I got from Alan has a mater forming. I was kinda worried with it being an 80 DTM mater, but I got all the later season ones I dared to try in the pots early in May and so far so good. I thought perhaps you would like our happy little crew. A few months ago Digit started a thread about what RMG was. Not specifically a geographical area, but more the climate and our approach to the challenges was what we thrashed about. :) We have a unique type of growing climate and season that kinda leaves us out of so many discussions elsewhere. And you definitely fit the profile where you are. :) And be sure to chime in on the Who's Here in 2007 thread that Skybird started. We need to count you and anyone else who has just joined us amongst our members. :)

For an insurance claim, you usually have up to 2 years to report any additional damage found as a cause of the initial claim, without paying an additional deductible, but your policy may be different. Get a reputable contractor (preferably 2 or 3), along with YOUR insurance adjuster, and the roofing company adjuster to take a look and determine the best course of action. I agree completely with the photos-of damage, during repair process, and after repairs are completed. Keep a copy for yourself-hold on to them for a minimum of 2 years, possibly longer, if you should decide to sell the house, you have proof that the repairs were done correctly and to code.

Look for longevity in the roofing company. The longer the company has been in business locally, the better. There are lots of fly by night folks who shoe up after a storm, slap shingles on, and leave. Much better to spend a bit more extra dollars and get a local company that will make sure the job is done right.

Hi, Paul. No hail here in Orono, but we got hammered last year. I'm so happy your hostas were spared. It is so heartbreaking to wait all winter for them, only to have them destroyed by hail. Can't wait for more pictures. Lois

Is that Orono, ME? It has nothing to do with hostas but my father's family was from Orono and I spent many wonderful summers there in the 50s. In all the time since I've never seen anyone else mention it so seeing it again is something of a thrill.

Yeah, I thought it was a new hosta, too, but I mis-read it as "Hail Mary" -- guess you know how I grew up!

Does anybody from NC remember the Mothers Day Hail storm of 2006? That was surreal. It was bright and sunny that day when we went over to my mother in laws for lunch. The sun was still shining there when my eldest son called me and said I might want to come home, it was hailing terribly, and my daughter (who was with me) had left her car windows down. It looked like a winterstorm had passed over when I got home. First time I ever skidded on ice driving in May. I don't know how big the hail balls actually were when they were comming down, but my greenhouse had holes the side of baseballs in the northern and western facing walls. Hope I never see anything like that again. My hostas were shredded, nothing left but stems, not to mention the damage to my DH vegetable garden.
