Blue Ivory or Stained Glass???

So far I've purchased over 30 hosta in the last 6 weeks. I've finally come to realize I can't buy ALL I want this year. So here's my problem... North side of my house, lots of shade, closest hosta is Guardian Angel... which would you do ... Stained Glass or Blue Ivory. I really like both but CANNOT get both. :-(

Blue Ivory. Cuz I think it'll look nicest next to Guardian Angel.

Babka, I like the part where you say you move about 20 pots out on the deck in March and that you can see them all the time. The hostas are so beautiful at that time. It would be a bonus to be able to see them "grow" before your very eyes! I am also curious about your outdoor deck. My husband just finished ours, but it hasn't been stained or painted. Is yours painted? Do you like it? Also, I have never thought of bringing a hosta pot indoors to force it to begin growing early. Sounds like a good idea. Maybe I'll try to find some threads that talk about this. I am in zone 6 (Canada), but considered zone 5 in USDA terms. My hostas begin to grow in late April. Last year I had pots in my unheated garage. When they started to grow, I had to take them outside. We had a lot of nights of frost, so some went back into the garage and some were covered with one of my 6 garbage pails. I have way too many now and 6 garbage pails are no way near enough.

LOL, Adrienne2011 you can come over whenever you want to and see the cabinets in person, especially if you can help pick paint colors or put together chandeliers! ;) Seriously. Anyone want to put together chandeliers? Please? Anyone? ICFgreen we are doing stone all the way up our fireplace, the same stone that is on the outside of our house. It's real stone, not stone veneer. I don't have a pic, but I THINK they will be putting it on soon (I found out that was why these cabinets had to go in now, they needed them in before putting stone on) honorbiltkit I am going up to PA to see my cabinet maker on labor day weekend and I will ask him then. They are extremely busy right now and I don't want to ask him to type everything out for me about how the stain was done. If I get an answer as to exactly how the staining was done, I will definitely post it on here. I am about 99.9 percent sure they just used domestic USA-made no/low VOC 3/4 maple plywood for these cabinets like they are doing for all the others in our house. I'm not sure about the magic wand and incantations ;) When they made us our stain sample, Jason's dad just went in the back and mixed it up somehow and put it on wood. The whole thing took about 4 minutes and there was no bleaching or staining or anything involved, so I'd be surprised if they bleached here... beekeeperswife we are in Wernersville (made famous by being the home of Jon & Kate Plus 8, LOL) so a bit over an hour outside Philly. I am sure Dutch Wood will be willing to go to you (you're going to be outside Harrisburg right or am I totally off?) They are going to Brooklyn and Washington DC to do cabinets for people who found him off of GW. Needless to say, I would highly recommend them if you do a kitchen or need any type of cabinets for your new home. Thanks to everyone else again as well for looking and commenting :)

No, I am in a Cleveland suburb. Indianapolis is way warmer than we are normally. It's not unusual for you to be about 2 weeks ahead of us. You are just across I-70 from Columbus. Our hostas are just beginning to "peek out" over the top of the soil. Most are still underground. However, it was 81 today when I went to the store. My dog was huffing and puffing on her walk.

Before you worry about curtains you should properly hang your stained glass panels. The way you have them now looks weird and takes away from the beautiful glass. Screw 2 hooks on either side, inside top frame of each window and hang your panels from them. As for the curtains, do you need them? Because your glass panels have now blocked the windows, your room appears dark. Old traditional houses that have small stained glass windows on both sides of fireplace don't usually have curtains on these windows.

Alexis - thanks for the question because it was a reason to go out and look at my Stained Glass. I don't have Blue Ivory; it has bold colors, but from what I can see on the Hosta Library the colors overall are similar to Guardian Angel, although it is different in appearance. By the end of the season, the yellow in Stain Glass is a deep, unusual color. See mine below - from the end of last year. This is personal preference, but for me the contrasting color of Stained Glass is the way to go; both are good looking hosta.

Ken, I only have 3 fragrant hosta at the moment. Although I want more.. I look for foliage first and if it has fragrance... bonus. So maybe .... I should get ...

Jbranch, Thank you for taking the time and looking at the Hosta Libary and your beautiful Stained Glass. That's sort of what I was thinking. I was concerned that Blue Ivory and Guardian Angel might be too similar. By the same token I just don't want the Stained Glass and Guardian Angel to clash.

I am waaayyyy overthinking this. LOL.

Plants never clash. Nature has a way of making plants look beautiful together. At least that is my opinion, gathered over more time than I care to mention. Don't worry about clashing. Get what you like.

Stained Glass looks better with some sun to bring out its best color, IMHO. Keep that in mind when making your choice.

Rats!!!

Dave, if I get these, one will get about 4 hours of morning sun and the other, due to overhead trees, might get 2 hours of very late day sun. Will that be enough for one or both. Probably not for the one on the west side :-(

The house is a blue/gray, and of course Guardian Angel has a lot of blue, so I guess what I'm trying to do is add a touch of bright color to a shady area. Does ANYONE have any other suggestions.

Sometimes I long for the day (when I was young)when gardening was just a plant you stuck in the ground. LOL.

Go for the Stained Glass...the extra sun will brighten it up...btw, it gets quite large, so give it space...I have leaves this year that are 9" across...

Hi, I know I'm late getting in on this thread, but I think that either one would be beautiful. I just purchased Blue Ivory this year and it is stunning, very showy and really stands out, but I agree with what someone else said, any combination of coloration with hostas you just can't go wrong on! Love, love, love them all, this year it just happens to be BI! Whatever the choice it's a hosta and you can't go wrong!
