Hoya finnaysonii cutting never rooted or died after 1 year later!

I've had this cutting since last year, got the cutting in a trade. I tugged on the plant today and it came out after whole year later. So I washed the cutting, cut the cuttings 2x to make 3 cuttings to stick them in semihydro pot. I use the yogurt cup, cut the holes in the bottom and the side, put in washed small chunks of lava rocks, put the cuttings in and fill the rest with the lava rocks.

Set the pot inside of another cup, put water up to the holes on the side of the pot. I did this with the Hoya linearis(3 weeks ago), it seem to be doing fine so far.

Even if it doesn't work on finnaysonii, I have nothing to loose.

I never have such thing happened so far, but I guess if it doesn't die after 1 year, it won't!

Yes, you have nothing to lose except a few minutes. It definitely worths a try. Maybe it's time for it to root now :-).

That's strange Jan. Are the leaves/stem on your cutting shriviled from the lack of roots taking up water?

European roses are always grafted - the only own root roses will have come from personal cuttings. Since there is a huge climactic range across the whole of continental Europe, I am a bit mystified by the US craze for bare root to the exclusion of all else, especially when many old and beautiful gardens contain grafted roses which are practically ancient. In fact, I would go so far as to say that the argument essentially holds validity for commercial rose-growers, who use certain methods for both convenience and tradition. Of course they are going to claim superiority for this or that method - for those of us who simply buy and grow roses in our own gardens, the own root vs grafted is of less importance than selecting appropriate plants for climate and soil conditions. As someone who has an almost equal number of each, although I grow roses in a temperate climate, I find this dilemma is one of the least contentious - of far greater importance is the continuing care and maintenance which plants receive (or not) once planted.

Thanks michaelg. Hmm. We did not get that low a low though we did have some frost warnings for tender plants on several overnights, I thought. Some of the bare roots were certainly healthier than others, though a couple that I thought had what appeared to be more cane damage than others seem to be doing better now. The tips do have/had a browning, like the last most tip of leaf growth died. I can't say the growth looked wilted though. I thought I was watering sufficiently and our rainfall was pretty good. Maybe it was insect damage. I think I will try and take some pictures and post here later on. I will leave them as is and not trim back any of the leaves. Hopefully they are working on deep roots.

Wow thank you thank you! This is exactly what I needed. I planted three cuttings I ordered online, two of which I used your second method and one of which I used the first method because the bottomost set of leaves had a peduncle! Definitely didn't want to chop that guy off.

People who tell you to keep any particular plant rootbound are simply repeating what they heard or read somewhere, because they certainly couldn't have reasoned themselves into that position. IF one assumes a person is using a very water-retentive soil and can't seem to control how much water the plant is getting, then it might be better for the plant to be grown tight so it uses the water in the root mass faster and in doing so eases the limitations imposed by saturated soil. With that scenario, what's REALLY occurring is, the grower is deciding which of 2 evils is preferential by trading the limitations imposed by root congestion for the limitations imposed by over-watering. Obviously repotting so roots have room to run and changing to a soil that doesn't burden the grower with worry over soil saturation offers MUCH more potential for a happy plant because it doesn't have to deal with either set of limitations - root congestion or a soggy home for roots. Whenever I hear the notion voiced that a plant likes to be grown rootbound, I know the source of the advice either 'doesn't get it' or doesn't care enough about who reads the advice to qualify it, because it should never be given w/o qualifications. and even then there is little justification for it OTHER than in some cases it can force a greater profusion of blooms in conspicuously flowering plants. I have a cutting tentatively IDed as H meredithii or vitellinoides which behaves similarly. I've had the cutting for a yr & it's done nothing other than drop 1 of its 2 leaves (I'd cut a 2 node cutting in 2 pieces, lost the other piece). The woman who gave me the cutting & for whom I've tentatively IDed it bloomed it once, then gave me cuttings. She recently said her does nothing after a yr. either -- frustrating!

She'd given me cuttings of this once before, 1 w/ a spur that bloomed inside the plastic cuttings bag. Unfortunately, it did so while I was away when my Dad died a yr ago; I cam home & found the end of the bloom.

Wish I knew what to suggest to make something happen!

My finlaysonii was the same way. I got my cutting last July (07) and it didn't root and didn't root, but didn't change either. It finally rooted this spring, but only just recently started growing. 'Krinkle 8' was another one that took a long time to root for me. And imperialis took a year and a half to root and then another 6 months before I saw any growth. Some are just stubborn. I've learned not to give up until there's no doubt they're dead!

It's amzing that the cutting did not die after all that time just sitting there. The stem is very woody but I thought it'll root after awhile. WRONG!!!!
But I am not giving up on the cutiings until it dies on me.
